Opal Nineva Cooper Swim, age 84, of Lower Licking Road, Morehead, Kentucky, oldest daughter of the late Roy Clifton and Lucy Ellen Holbrook Cooper, was born April 5, 1924, in Fleming County, Kentucky. She passed away Thursday, November 13, 2008, at the Ridgeway Nursing Home in Owingsville, Kentucky. Opal graduated from Flemingsburg High School in 1941. She then began working at a defense plant in Niles, OH during World War II. Later she attended Morehead State University and then was a teacher in the Fleming County school system for three years. She married Ralph Rollan Swim on October 24, 1945. He preceded her in death on August 26, 1964. Opal was a member of the Crain Creek Christian Church since the age of thirteen, but was a faithful worker in the Bluebank First Church of God after her marriage. She became a seamstress at the age of nine under the careful guidance of her mother and continued sewing down through the years, taking many available classes. Opal worked eleven years for R. H. Hobbs Co., as cashier and salesperson, also was Division Manager for Roses Dept. Store for over three years. Opal was a former 4-H Leader and member of the Bluebank Harvesters, Elderhostel, and Homemakers, both in Sharkey and Hillsboro. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, quilting, candlewicking, embroidering, and upholstering. She was a good wife, mother, and a friend to all whom she met. Survivors include two children, Steve Loren Swim and wife Rhonda and Ralpha Ann Harvey and husband Gary, all of Salt Lick, Kentucky; four grandchildren, Phillip Nolan Swim and wife Cheryl, Robin Stephanie Finch and husband Darian of Morehead, Kentucky, Jessica Ann Harvey and Katelyn Allison Harvey of Salt Lick, Kentucky; three great grandchildren, Nicholas Nathan Finch, Jarrad Morgan Finch, and Ashlee Mae Finch of Morehead, Kentucky; daughter-in-law Sue Miller and husband Doug of Xenia, Ohio; one brother, Neolen Cooper and wife Joyce of Springfield, Ohio; one sister, Jean Watson and husband Wilbur of Hillsboro, Kentucky; a very special friend, Vasile Venettozzi of Morehead, Kentucky; and many wonderful nieces and nephews that were very dear to her heart. Preceding her in death were a son, Carl Olen Swim; a granddaughter, Lauren Ashlee Swim; two brothers, Loren Cooper and Lowell Cooper; four sisters, Olive Roark, Betty Ison, Ida Taylor and Gloria Sue Cooper. Opal will be sadly missed by many other relatives, neighbors and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, November 17, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jeff Fannin, Rev. Mark Caldwell, and Rev. Randall Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Swim Cemetery on Lower Licking Road, Morehead. Pallbearers will be Doug Caldwell, Chris Caldwell, Gary Ramey, Donny Cooper, Winston Swim, Sonny Roark, George Watson, Tim Stevens, Phillip Swim, and Nicholas Finch. Honorary pallbearers will be nieces and nephews. Visitation is after 2 p.m. Sunday, November 16, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals.
