Obituary

Opal Whitt Adkins, age 95, of Flemingsburg Road, Morehead, Kentucky, widow of Beecher Herman Adkins, passed away Saturday, July 17, 2010, at her residence. She was born May 24, 1915, in Morgan County, Kentucky, to Garfield and Susie Whitt. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by four siblings, Otis, Eva, Marie, and Rebee; two grandchildren, Winford Adkins and Mandy Adkins; one son-in-law, Marvin Jennings; and one daughter-in-law, Josephine Adkins. Beecher, her husband of nearly fifty years, passed away July 28, 1983. Opal is survived by one daughter, Glaspie Jennings, of Morehead, Kentucky; four sons, Paul Adkins of Morehead, Kentucky, Madison Adkins and his wife Theresa of Winchester, Kentucky, Darrel Adkins and his wife Phyllis of Galena, Ohio; and Michael Adkins and his wife Cathy of Estero, Florida; nine grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and one great-great grandson. Other survivors include two brothers, Stanley Whitt and Beecher Whitt, both of Wrigley, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; other family; and many friends. In addition to being a homemaker, wife, and mother, Opal was an employee of the Morehead State University cafeteria from 1952-1977. Never one to be idle, she took pride in having a home that was always clean and looked forward to processing an abundance of garden vegetables such as canned green beans, frozen corn, pickled corn, sour kraut, pickled beets, and tomato juice. Her bountiful goods were enjoyed by all of her children, other family and friends. Another one of Opal-s greatest joys was making quilts. Through the years, she carefully crafted countless baby quilts, twin- to king-size quilts, doll quilts, and other special quilted items, which can be found in homes of family and friends throughout the country. During the past ten years, Opal lovingly prepared a quilt to be raffled in memory of her granddaughter Mandy at the Darrel Adkins Musicians Against Childhood Cancer annual concert to benefit St. Jude Children-s Research Hospital. Not only was Opal a meticulous quilter, but she was also a seamstress who repaired, remodeled or created many types of clothing, re-upholstered furniture, designed curtains, pillows, or assorted items needed to finish any job. She was a perfectionist who wanted every stitch to be just right. Opal was a wonderful cook who prepared everyone-s favorite dish. She loved entertaining family and friends in her home and equally enjoyed sending meals to shut-ins or those who could not come to her home. For many years, Opal and Beecher enjoyed traveling to Bluegrass festivals, taking vacations, and attending various kinds of special events. Opal will be remembered for her independent spirit and always caring for others. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery.
