Obituary for Alberta June Whitt Barker

Alberta June Whitt Barker, age 78, of KY 801 North, Morehead, passed away Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in a one room home on June 24, 1939, in Sandy Hook, the youngest child of the late Allan and Sarah Elsie Whitt. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Edwin Gene Barker; a granddaughter, Megan Kendall; two brothers, Boyd (Sara) Whitt and Delmar (Naomi) Whitt; and two sisters, Mary Adkins and Isa (Curt) Clevenger.

Alberta is survived by her beloved and devoted husband of 61 years, Burl “Gene” Barker, whom she married September 8, 1956; her loving children, who knew her as a “Proverbs 31” Mother, Belinda (Gary) Kendall of Olathe, KS, Rhonda (Scott) Green Anderson, IN, Robin (David) Pollitte , Brigette (Bill) Brock and Chris Barker, all of Morehead; her happily spoiled grandchildren, Jonathan (Katy) Brock of Winchester, Kristen (Josh) Levitt Maui, Hawaii, Jeremy (Jesi) Kendall Olathe, KS, Luke Kendall of Irvine, CA , Alysa (Nick) Villelli of Indianapolis, IN, Kayli (Brant) Clatterbuck of Myrtle Beach, SC, Chris (Janelle) Green of Indianapolis, IN, Brandon (Jessica) Brock of Morehead, Lauria (Mason) Webb of Indianapolis, IN, and Brianna Pollitte of Florence; and her great grandchildren Annalee and Zeke Brock, Lexi Finch, Landon, Morgan and Evelyn Kendall, Grace Green, Maya Clatterbuck and Erickson Villelli.

She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who knew Alberta and Gene as loving family whose home was always open.

Alberta attended elementary and high school in Sandy Hook. She received numerous English awards throughout her elementary and secondary education. She met Gene in 1954 and they began their beautiful journey together.

She and Gene shared a passion for the sport of drag racing. They began racing as a hobby in 1955 in Portsmouth, OH and continued in Clay City where Alberta won the Powder Puff class 4 times in a row in a red ‘64 GTO Pontiac 4 speed (belonging to a good friend, Billy Richard Whitt) and her white ‘62 SuperSport 409 4 speed Chevrolet.

While Gene was working for East KY Paving, Alberta maintained the daily responsibilities of their first business venture, Morehead Speed Shop. They soon turned their passion for drag racing into a wonderful life for their family beginning with the leasing of Mt Park Drag way in Clay City in 1967.

They moved to Morehead in 1968 to raise their family, accompanied by Alberta’s mother, Granny Whitt. Alberta served as chief financial officer and secretary of their racing business partnership; however, most of the racers will tell you she was the boss of the operation. They owned/operated multiple facilities throughout Kentucky, Tennessee and Ohio. Within this business model, their children and grandchildren learned the art of hard work and integrity in life by participating as employees and partners. Alberta’s influence also extended to staff and racers who lovingly refer to her as ‘Granny’ and often sought out her wisdom. A few of the awards that Gene and Alberta received in their career included, Track Operator of the Year 1975, Track of the Year 1980, Man of the Year 1987, and Promoter of the Year 1992.

Her many interests included shopping for her kids and grandkids, needlepoint, Home Interior decorating, fishing, watching Wheel of Fortune, completing Word Search puzzles, and gathering with her family.

After retiring, her greatest joy was serving as part of the pit crew for Chris and his buddies as he traveled throughout the country continuing living their drag racing dream.

She was a dedicated and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all who met her. Alberta had a strong and passionate love for her family.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 17, 2018, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastors Belinda and Gary Kendall officiating.
Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jonathan Brock, Jeremy Kendall, Luke Kendall, Christopher Green, Brandon Brock, Josh Levitt, Nick Villelli, Brant Clatterbuck, and Mason Webb.
