Obituary

Naomi Sue Jessie Burton was born on December 19, 1946, in Carter County, Kentucky, to the late Estill W. and Faye Dana Carroll Jessie and passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on Saturday, October 12, 2024.

She was married to Carlos Burton on May 17, 1963, and happily in love for 61 years. Carlos and Sue had three sons and one daughter: Carlos Burton, Jr. and Teresa of Morehead, Kentucky, Rebecca and Butch Stevens of Emerson, Kentucky, David and Jeanne Ann Burton of Morehead, and Mark and Jennifer Burton of Olive Hill, Kentucky.

Sue and Carlos both loved their children very much. Mamaw Sue was a title that many knew her by and lovingly called her including her grandchildren, Haley and Mark May Jr., Jared and Chelsea Burton, Brian and Nikki Burton, Samuel and Michaela Stevens, Brooke Burton, Samantha and Hunter Richmond, Rebecca Stevens and Brooklyn Sexton who were loved by her very much. Additionally, Mamaw Sue had seven great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild whom she loved so much.

Sue was a devoted Christian for 42 years. She was a member of the Dry Branch Church of God. She was strong in her faith with so much love for her brothers and sisters in the church. She loved to support the church with her time, prayers, and food.

Sue was a strong and hard-working woman; after 31 years of working in various sewing factories, she retired.

Mamaw Sue and Papaw Carl loved and enjoyed their families. Their home was the family gathering place. When you entered their home, you felt loved and welcomed by their presence. Sue was constantly hosting dinners and accommodating company. She loved to cook, bake, and sew, especially as gifts to her family and friends. For example, first, Easter was made special with wooden bunnies lining the walkway, passing by a tree filled with eggs, leading you to a meal you wouldn't forget. Next, Summer was made special with quilts that had a flip-flop pattern, walking the creek and looking for treasure, and evenings with a popsicle on the porch. Finally, you knew Christmas time was coming when flour and cookie-cutters were scattered across the counter tops, the refrigerator was filled with pans lined with candy, and the kitchen table had a sweet treat for everyone; also, quilts were made with hand-painted blocks for all to wrap up in to stay warm. Sue enjoyed the sleepovers with the grandchildren as much as they did. Mamaw Sue created so many wonderful memories for her family to look back on as they miss her.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Mathel Jessie and Jeanette Hinton: three brothers, Estill Jessie Jr., David Jessie, and Leonard Jessie. She is survived by her brother Coy Jessie (Joyce), and sisters Verna Wilson and Delma Sloan (Glennis), all of Olive Hill, Kentucky.

Sue leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and friends that she loved very much. Sue and her family are very appreciative of everyone praying and sending their condolences.
