Mary Virginia
(Rettinger) Maher
Jan 14, 1942 — Jul 5, 2023
Mary Virginia Rettinger Maher, age 81, of Morehead, KY, passed away on July 5, 2023, following a sudden illness. Mary was born on January 14, 1942, in Ravenna, OH, and grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, OH. She moved to Kentucky to be with the love of her life, husband Jim Maher. They shared over 22 perfect years together.
She is a graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School and Hammel Actual College. She was a devout Catholic and belonged to Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church in Morehead, Kentucky. Mary had worked many years for Portage Machine and, later, for Ohio Edison, from which she retired.
She was predeceased by her sister, Helen Rettinger; mother, Marien Rettinger; father, Vincent Rettinger; and nephew, Vincent Balas.
Mary is survived by her husband of 22 years, James Maher; daughter, Deanna (DeMartino) Huff; son-in-law, Daniel Huff; granddaughter, Angela Huff; grandson, Michael Huff; step son Kyle Maher; sisters: Sally Schmidt, Martha Byrd (Robert), Janet Burrell (Jim); and brother, David Rettinger.
Mary was a much-loved sister-in-law and friend to Allison and Leonard Stern and the extended Stern family and friends. She will be dearly missed by Eddie, Stephanie, Ben, Avery and Ezra Stern, Andrea Stern, Ken DiPaola, and Simon Pelzman. Mary shared many trips and holidays with the Sterns. During those trips Mary was so fond of sharing Pina Coladas with her dear friend, Susan Rein of New York City. Later in life, Mary became a world traveler touching down in quite a few European countries, Mexico, Canada, and various island locations.
She was a whiz at crossword and jigsaw puzzles and was quite a good cook and seamstress in her day. Mary enjoyed sharing meals with family and friends and dazzled everyone with her beautiful outfits - always impeccably put together. When she entered a room, she set it alight with her smile and twinkling green eyes. To all who knew her, she was an excellent mother, grandmother, wife, sister, aunt, and friend with a strong, unwavering faith and trust in the Lord.
Mary was the beloved twin sister of Martha Byrd; whom she loved deeply. For many years the sisters attended the Twins Day Festivals held in Twinsburg, Ohio. She was the beloved aunt to Martha's children, Steven Byrd and Michael Holley. Mary was a much-loved sister-in-law to Don and Lois Maher and aunt to Justin and Eric who adored and treasured having her in their family. They shared many adventures across the country. Mary, Martha, and Lois were the "three amigas."
