Mary Theresa Foley Carew was born April 17, 1917, in New York, New York. She died at home after a brief illness on January 1, 2015, in Morehead, Kentucky, surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Thomas A. Carew; her parents, Edmund Leo Foley and Sarah O'Loughlin Foley; and brothers, Edmund and William T. She is survived by her sister, Margaret Foley Cady and brother-in-law, John L Cady, Bronxville, NY, and sister-in-law, Rosamond Carew, Watermill, NY, as well as her daughter Mary V. Caric (Ric Caric), Morehead; sons, Charles Carew (Rachael Fulbright), Breaux Bridge, LA, and Thomas Carew (Molly Barrett Carew), Morehead. In addition, grandchildren Jesse Carew (fianc- Shannon Baker), Sarah Carew (Sean Dunne), Maura Carew, Christopher Carew, Peter Carew (Kelsey Cronin Carew), Katy Caric, Tess Caric; great grandchild, Henry Thomas Carew; and many cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends. Mary attended Butler Hospital School of Nursing in Providence, RI, becoming a Registered Nurse in 1938. She completed her BS (1942) and Masters in Education (1948) both at Columbia University, NYC. Her professional career spanned 45 years. Mary worked as a RN in several hospitals before joining the NYC Health Department Visiting Nurse Corps. Then, for many years, she was a School Nurse Teacher in Rockville Centre, NY. Upon retirement, she and her beloved husband Tom moved from Garden City, NY to Venice, FL where they enjoyed the beautiful sunshine and the terrific community of Circlewood. Mary was a great communicator, keeping up with her grandchildren, many nieces, and nephews around the globe. She loved to swim and play golf, and had a true passion for bridge! In her later years she moved to Morehead, KY and fully engaged herself in the community. Mary was an active member of Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church in Morehead. Visitation will be on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at Jesus Our Savior Catholic Church from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. with Father Paul Prabell officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Mary requested that in lieu of flowers donations may be made to: Frontier Housing, 5445 Flemingsburg Road, Morehead, KY 40351; St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351; Christian Social Services, PO Box 147, Morehead, KY 40351; or a charitable organization of your choice.
