Mary Joyce Burchett Gabbard, 87, of Olive Hill, KY, departed this Earth December 12, 2009, to join her beloved husband and daughter in heaven. Mary Joyce was born December 27, 1921, in Carter County, KY, to the late Don and Ethel Garvin Burchett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawton Gabbard Sr.; daughter, Martha Sue Gabbard McGlone; grandsons, David McGlone and Scotty Brent Gabbard; and brother, Phillip Ford Burchett. She graduated from Morehead Teachers College in 1941 and then was employed by the Carter County Board of Education as an elementary school teacher. Upon marriage to her husband Lawton, they established a long-time successful business, Gabbard Department Store in Olive Hill, which was in operation for 36 years. After retirement, she devoted her life to her grandchildren. Mary Joyce is survived by one daughter, Ethel Mae Gabbard Burchett, and a son, Lawton Gabbard Jr. She is also survived by two grandsons, Billy Michael McGlone and Lawton Gabbard III; three granddaughters, Mary Ann Gabbard Smith, Hope Gabbard Cole and Christy Burchett Rodgers; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a very special son-in-law, Billy Hugh McGlone, and a very special grandson-in-law, Jeremy -Spanky- Rodgers. There will be no visitation. Burial will be at Garvin Ridge Cemetery in Carter County following a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriners Children-s Hospital, 1900 Richmond Road, Lexington, KY 40502.
