Mary Yager
Alfrey
Jun 29, 1932 — Sep 25, 2013
Mary Yager Alfrey, age 81, of Hollan Court, Morehead, passed away Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at her home. Born June 29, 1932, in Mitchell, South Dakota, she was a daughter of the late James Gordon and Lurene Davis Yager. Mary is survived by her husband of 59 years, George Alfrey, Jr. (whom she wed May 8, 1954, while George was serving in the U.S. Air Force and Mary was teaching in Sioux City, Iowa) and their children, son Todd Alfrey of Morehead; daughters Cindy Alfrey Amburgey and husband Larry of Morehead, Jennifer Hardin and husband Dean of Lexington, and Kathy Mazzotti and husband Greg of Wheeling, West Virginia; seven grandchildren, Heather Amburgey Welte, Laura Amburgey Craig, Gretchen Hardin, Anthony Mazzotti, Kristen Alfrey, Everett Alfrey, and Kelly Alfrey; and eight great grandchildren, Jacob, Madison, Elijah, Grace, Wyatt, Silas, Ella, and Josie. Other survivors include her brother, Bob Yager and wife Jan of Athens, Georgia; one niece, Tish Yager Holland; and two nephews, James Yager and Steven Yager. Mary Alfrey's lifelong devotion to the Methodist church, both in spirit and in function, is woven throughout her life from childhood to adulthood. Morningside College, a Methodist based school, was her stepping stone to her future life with various churches from Texas to New York: especially including the Morehead United Methodist Church. Mary's community involvement also dear to her heart included work with the Morehead Woman's Club, various community projects including the development of the Morehead Youth Center, and beautification of downtown Morehead. For her contributions, Mary was honored by being selected Woman of the Year by the Morehead Lions Club. Her Girl Scouts leader years were particularly rewarding relative to both friends and family. All said, Mary's loving and devout husband, most importantly, was always her rock and her most ardent protector. Her life was built around her loving children and grandchildren in ways that exemplified her depth of love and devotion to them and her community. A Celebration of Life will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, September 29, 2013, at the Morehead United Methodist Church, Wesley Hall with the Rev. Aaron Mansfield and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in the Caudill Cemetery on West Main Street. Pallbearers: Larry Amburgey, Dean Hardin, Greg Mazzotti, Anthony Mazzotti, Jack Carter, and Tom Fossett.
