Margena Grace Ellington Hardin, age 90, of Morehead, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015, at her home. She was born May 25, 1924, in Rowan County, the daughter of the late Reynold Cranston Ellington and Esther Grace Hook Ellington. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Philemon Allen Hardin, as well as a sister, Virginia Ellington Martin, and a brother, Milford 'Duke' Ellington. She is survived by two sons, Larry Hardin and wife Peggi and Phillip Hardin and wife Pam, all of Morehead; five grandchildren: Wes (Michelle) Hardin of Morehead; Michael (Sunny) Hardin of Frankfort; Casey (Nicole) Hardin of Rock Springs, Wyoming; Brooke Hardin of Maysville; and Chris Martin of Lexington; nine great grandchildren: Morgan, Madison, Emerson, Bridges, Tyler, Reese, and Makenzie Hardin and Will and Lane Martin. She is also survived by a niece, Gail Martin, and a nephew, Reynold 'Rennie' Ellington, both of Middletown, Ohio; and her two wonderful caregivers, Kathy Charles and Janet Lambert. Margena was the valedictorian of Morehead High School, Class of 1942. She attended Morehead State College where she received bachelor's and master's degrees and then a Rank I in Elementary Education. She taught many years at Clearfield Elementary School, where she was a much beloved teacher. She loved children, loved teaching them, and treated all students as if they were her own. She will be fondly remembered by family and friends, as well as her sons' friends who were treated like her own when they were in her home and by the many friends of her grandchildren who still lovingly call her 'Granny.' Visitation will be after 12 p.m. Friday at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with a funeral service beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, January 16, 2015, with Rev. Ben Furman officiating. Burial will follow in New Alfrey Cemetery. Pallbearers: Daniel Hook, Jeff Johnson, Garland Earley, Dale McKenzie, Frosty McKenzie, and Dean Hardin. In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to St. Claire Hospice, 222 Medical Circle, Morehead, KY 40351. Visitation: Friday, January 16, 2015, after 12 noon Funeral: Friday, January 16, 2015, at 2 p.m. Interment: ew Alfrey Cemetery
