She Earned Her Wings
My mom has earned her wings.
She struggled enough in this life, carrying wounds that began long before we were old enough to understand them. She learned how to protect her heart before she ever learned
that it was safe to let someone hold it.
She was guarded. She was complicated. She was scared of loving and maybe even more scared of being loved.
But beneath all of that was such a beautiful soul.
And when my mom loved, she loved in her own way. Maybe I couldn’t always recognize it then, but I can see it now.
There are stories that only we, her children, know. Stories we will carry for the rest of our lives.
Some are beautiful. Some are painful. Some will make us laugh until we cry, and others we may never tell anyone.
But when I remember her, I want to remember the light.
The light she kept so carefully guarded but let slip through every once in a while.
Those little pieces of her that showed us who she was underneath everything this world had put her through.
I wish life had been gentler with her. I wish she had known that she didn’t always have to protect herself. I wish she had been able to let more love in without being afraid of what it might cost her.
But in her final moments, she didn’t have to be afraid anymore.
She was loved. She was surrounded by love. She was cared for. She was not alone.
And now, Mom, you don’t have to fight anymore.
There is no more pain. No more fear. No more struggling. No more carrying the weight
you carried for so many years.
I pray that wherever your soul has gone, you have finally found the peace this life could not always give you.
I hope you feel light. I hope you feel free. And I hope you finally understand
just how deeply you were loved.
Rest peacefully, Mom. Your struggles are over now. You earned your wings.
With much love and gratitude, written by daughter Emilia.
