Louella Margaret Ward Thomas, age 86, of Old House Creek, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Ashland, Kentucky. She was born June 9, 1924, in Rowan County, Kentucky, daughter of the late John Leslie and Ferol Withrow Ward. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Maude Kopack, Vada Sue Russell, Ruby Knight, Elizabeth Ison, Barbara Gifford, and Frances Cassity, and one brother, Finley Ward. John Carl Thomas, her husband of 62 years, passed away on April 15, 2004; a son, Ruben F. D. Thomas, on January 19, 2006; a son, Dr. Robert Jerome Thomas, on June 18, 2010; a grandson, Edward Earhart, on September 11, 2001; and a daughter-in-law, Juanita Skaggs Thomas, on September 4, 1997. Mrs. Thomas is survived by two sons, Les Thomas and wife Toni of Spruce, Michigan, and John W. Thomas and wife Rhonda of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; two daughters, Charlotte Thomas Earhart and husband Tom of Winchester, Kentucky, and Claudette Thomas of Morehead, Kentucky; one daughter-in-law, Lorna Thomas of Morehead, Kentucky; one sister, Agnes Patterson of East Ridge, Tennessee; 11 grandchildren, Andrea Earhart Stauter, April Earhart Horton, Leslie Thomas II, Matthew Thomas, Christopher Thomas, Caleb Thomas, Aldrin Erni, Trudi Erni, Ethan Thomas, Joshua Erni, and Ian Thomas; and Ruben F. D. Thomas, Jr.; and three great grandchildren, Elaina Thomas, Benjamin Thomas, and Laurel Stauter. In addition to being extremely family oriented, Louella and John Carl were stalwart supporters of charitable efforts of the Masons, Shriners, and Eastern Star and other Masonic affiliates and were greatly appreciated for their hands-on participation at nearly every event. Louella was a 35-year member and Past Worthy Matron of Morehead Chapter #227 Order of the Eastern Star, had served as Lady of the Past Grand Commander of the Grand Commandry of Kentucky, and for many years was active with the American Legion Women-s Auxiliary, Morehead Shrinettes, and Cave Run Chapter DeMolay Mothers Club. She was also a Cub Scout den mother for 12 years. She was a member of Morehead First Free Will Baptist Church. A lifelong learner, Louella graduated from Elliottville School and Morehead High School. As a nontraditional student, she earned her business certification from Rowan County Vocational School in 1976 and then attended Morehead State University. Despite her numerous endeavors, Louella was always a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who delighted in bringing joy to others. Louella-s love extended beyond her family and her many friends to those individuals who were privileged to have her as their conscientious, loyal, and devoted caregiver. Her legacy of unselfish love and service to others will continue through those whose lives she touched. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. J. D. Reeder officiating. Burial will follow in the Hamilton Cemetery. Grandsons and nephews will serve as pallbearers. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Monday, April 4, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Eastern star services will be conducted 7:30 p.m. Monday by Morehead Chapter #227 Order of the Eastern Star.
