Obituary

Loren Earl Smith, 61, of Brown Ridge, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, June 20, 2011, at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Born May 28, 1950, in Athens, Ohio, he is the son of Lora Hamilton Smith of Barberton, Ohio, and the late Lester Earl Smith. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marquita Kay Patrick Smith, whom he wed June 11, 1969; four sons and daughters-in-law, Loren II and Misty Smith of Lebanon, Missouri, Kelly and Helen Smith of Morehead, Kentucky, Patrick and Joelie Smith of Morehead, Kentucky, Kristian and Stephanie Smith of Overland Park, Kansas; and 14 grandchildren, Loren III, T. J. Sampson, Michael, Rachel, Courtney, Kiley, Joshua, Nathan, Hunter, McKenzie, Connor, Melissa, and Kane. Other survivors include two brothers, Donald Smith of Barberton, Ohio, and James Smith of Bay Village, Ohio; two sisters, Daphne Dean of Hanford, California, and Mary Lou Byerley of Richmond, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews. Loren served in the U.S. Navy, was a former Vice President of Facilities for Haggar Apparel in Dallas, Texas, and was a part-time farmer. A dedicated Mason, Loren was a member and Past Master of Phelps Masonic Lodge No. 482. A member of the Morehead York Rite bodies, Loren was Past High Priest of Morehead Chapter No. 168, Royal Arch Masons, Past Illustrious Master, Morehead Council No. 45, Royal and Select Masters, and was completing his term as Commander of Morehead Commandery No. 53, Knights Templar. He was also a member and Past Governor of Highland York Rite College No. 134, Senior Deacon of Morehead Council No. 484, Allied Masonic Degrees, and Kentucke Council No. 71, Knight Masons. A 32nd degree member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in the Valley of Covington, he was also a member of the El Hasa Shrine and Olive Hill Chapter No. 290, Order of the Eastern Star. Loren was a member of the Morehead Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Disabled American Veterans. Loren volunteered with the Elliott County Sheriff-s department as a Special Deputy and for six years, volunteered with the Elliottville Fire Department, leaving with the rank of Captain and Safety Officer. He also assisted in the establishment of the Haldeman Fire Department. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. J. D. Reeder and Brother Scott Tipton officiating. Burial will follow in the Hamilton-Mawk Cemetery in Lewis County, Kentucky, with full military honors conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Sons and grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Visitation is after 3 p.m. Thursday, June 24, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, Kentucky. Commandery Services and Masonic Services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Loren may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1900 Richmond Rd., Lexington, KY 40502 or Masonic Homes of Kentucky, 3701 Frankfort Ave., Louisville, KY 40207. Visitation: Thursday, June 23, 2011, after 3 p.m. Funeral: Friday, June 24, 2011, at 1 p.m. Interment: Hamilton-Mawk Cemetery, Lewis County, KY
