Obituary

Larry Whitt, age 67, of Morehead, passed away unexpectedly after a valiant fight while recovering from a long illness on July 3, 2023, at St. Claire HealthCare with his devoted family by his side.

He was born August 3, 1955, in Athens, Ohio, to the late Clyde and Florine Day Whitt.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Wayne Moore, and a nephew, Chris Moore.

Larry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Kathy (Plank) Whitt, whom he married on Christmas Eve 1975; one sister, Sue "Sis" Moore; two daughters , Amy (Darren) Blevins and Emily (Gary) Clarke, all of Morehead; seven grandchildren, Tyler (Brianna) Blevins, Arlie (Dustin) Hogge, Brooke Blevins, Tucker Blevins, and Toby Blevins, all of Morehead, Chelsea (Ryan) Spangler of Winchester, and Paige Clarke of Morehead; five great-grandchildren,  Caden Blevins, Owen Blevins, Brady Hogge, Adaline Spangler, and Elijah Spangler; his spoiled kitty, Bella; and many friends.

Larry graduated from Rowan County High School in 1973, where he was an active member of the FFA, winning an award to be able to go to Washington DC with only a select number of other students.

Throughout his years, Larry wore many hats; he was a Jaycee, worked at Helwig's Service Station, was a police officer for Morehead Police Department, was a jailer for the Rowan County Jail, installed satellite dishes, delivered newspapers for Lexington Herald-Leader, and was a security guard for a gated community in Lexington.  Above all of that, he was loved, admired, and most affectionately known as Mr. Larry to all of the children and adults alike when he was a custodian at McBrayer Elementary School.

Larry began as a volunteer firefighter with Route 377 Fire Department, before moving and becoming a volunteer in August 1979 at Morehead Fire Department. He enjoyed taking the fire safety trailer to schools educating children on fire safety. Larry retired as a lieutenant after many devoted years.  Even though he retired, his heart never left the fire service.

Larry worked hard so he could play hard; he enjoyed watching and attending NASCAR races, hunting, fishing, and Reds Baseball games.
