Larry W. Stephenson, age 68, of Bays Avenue, Morehead, Kentucky, a well-known retired MSU administrator and community volunteer, passed away Saturday, January 24, 2009, at the U.K. Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky. Born April 18, 1940, in Worthington, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Morris and Lucille Tackett Stephenson. Larry-s wife of 41 years, Kay Frances Wheeler Stephenson, passed away March 29, 2005. He is survived by one daughter, Kerry Conrad and husband Dale of Falmouth, Kentucky; one son, Robert (Cray) Stephenson and wife Michelle of Milton, Florida; and four grandchildren, Brandon Stephenson and wife Hailey, Megan Ross, Patrick Stephenson, and Kelton Stephenson. Also surviving are one brother, Michael Stephenson and wife Mary of Bardstown, Kentucky, and one sister, Sue Crouch of Cold Spring, Kentucky. A 1959 graduate of Raceland High School, Larry earned three degrees from Morehead State University: a B.A. Degree with majors in Health and Physical Education and Commerce, with emphasis in Accounting, in 1964; a M.A. in Education in 1968; and a M.A. in Higher Education in 1976. He also completed elementary and secondary school principal certifications. During the late 1950-s and 60-s, Larry worked for Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and from 1964-67 was a teacher and basketball coach at Augusta High School. In 1967, he began his career at MSU when he was named Director of Regents Hall. During his 33 years at the University, Larry served in several positions of student development including Director of Student Housing, Dean of Students, Director of Administrative Services and Director of Student Activities. In addition, he was an Assistant Professor of Accounting. For more than 20 years, Larry served as the Student Government Association Advisor. In 1999, he was recognized for his dedication and support of students with a student scholarship fund named in his honor-- the Larry Stephenson SGA Endowment Fellowship. Among the numerous committees on which he served, Larry was a member of the steering committee to establish the MSU Staff Congress and for more than a decade served as member, committee chair, vice chair, and chair of the Staff Congress. In 2000, he was the recipient of the Distinguished Staff Service Award. A member of MSU-s Retirees Association, Larry has served on the Executive Committee since 2002. Always involved in athletics, he had been a member of the MSU Quarterback Club and was named an Honorary MSU Football Coach. He was manager of the 16th Region basketball and baseball tournaments. Larry was a member of the Morehead Community Federal Credit Union and was currently Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a strong Democrat who worked for Harp Enterprises during elections, a railroad enthusiast, former Boy Scout leader, and Habitat for Humanity volunteer. He supported the American Red Cross Bloodmobile by regularly donating blood (over 10 gallons) and taught at Eastern Kentucky Correction Complex in West Liberty, Kentucky. During retirement, he and his wife Kay traveled extensively. An active member of Morehead United Methodist Church, he was involved in many church projects and also volunteered at MSU-s Wesley Foundation. Larry served as co-president of -Merry Mixers- with his wife Kay and later was president of the group. He recently became Chair of Trustees at the church. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 2009, at the Morehead United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bruce Nettleton officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery. Pallbearers: Buford Crager, Brandon Stephenson, Brian Hutchinson, Drew McNeill, Clyde James, Bob Stanley, Johnny Fryman, and Kenny White. Honorary Pallbearers: Former Student Government Association Presidents, Rob Huffman, Charles -Buck- Wheeler, Kip Crager, and Kyle Crager. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the MSU Foundation, designated to the Larry Stephenson SGA Endowment Fellowship, Palmer Development House, Morehead, KY 40351 or the Morehead United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or Building Fund, 227 West Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351 Visitation for Larry W.
