Kenneth Larry
Charles
Feb 9, 1946 — Jul 19, 2024
Kenneth Larry Charles, 78, of Morehead, passed away Friday, July 19, 2024, at the Albert B. Chandler Hospital in Lexington, KY.
Born February 9, 1946, in Phelps, KY, Larry was the son of the late Vincent and Juanita Miller Charles. In addition to his parents, Larry was preceded in death by his son, Kenneth "Buddy" Charles; a grandson, Corey Maynard; and one brother, James "Jimmy" Charles.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Amaryllis (Smith) Charles, whom he wed on September 20, 1965, and their two children, Melissia "Missi" Kirk (Eddie) of Salt Lick and Larry "Scooter" Charles (Melinda) of Lakeview Heights; four grandchildren, Tyler Maynard, Kenna Barker (Austin), Easton and Maddux Charles; two great grandchildren, Charlie Maynard and Zander Barker.
Other survivors include his siblings: Gail Bevins (Terry) of Shelbiana, Paul Ray Charles (Marcie) of Phelps, and Sandy Bevins (Jim) of South Williamson. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Larry was a retired Kentucky State Trooper who served under Posts 4 and 9 and worked with the Trooper Island Kids Camp during his career. Larry, Unit No. 747, was a graduate of the 1968 KSP Class No. 38.
In addition to his time in law enforcement, Larry was a coal miner and business owner in the Phelps area. He was also a long-time member of the Thomas DeVenny Masonic Lodge No. 928 in Freeburn, KY.
Larry enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren who affectionately called him "Popaw." He enjoyed watching television (especially the Cincinnati Reds), traveling, sharing a good meal, and watching his grandchildren participate in a host of sporting events. He never met a stranger and had more love to give than anyone else, especially to the dogs in his life.
At his request, there will be no visitation. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers or contributions, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Trooper Island via mail at Trooper Island, Inc., Kentucky State Police, 919 Versailles Road, Frankfort, KY 40601, by phone at (270) 433-5422, or online at https://squareup.com/store/trooper-island.
