Maritta Joyce Hanes Pennington, 62, of Open Fork Road, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Monday, July 9, 2012, at St. Mary-s Hospital in Huntington, West Virginia. Born August 21, 1949, in Rowan County, Kentucky, Joyce was the daughter of the late Edgar and Elizabeth Adkins Hanes. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby and Billy Hanes; four sisters, Ivory Pearl Hanes, Carolyn Harris, Margie Combs, and Mary Burton; and an infant daughter, Billie Jo Pennington. Joyce is survived by her husband, Billy Ray Pennington, whom she married November 13, 1965; one daughter, Sherry Black and husband Lyndon of Morehead, Kentucky, and three grandchildren, Sharon Black, Ethan Black and Nathan Black. Other survivors include two brothers, Kenneth Hanes of Astor, Florida, and Denvil Hanes of Morehead, Kentucky; one sister, Nelma Riley of Clearfield, Kentucky; other family members and friends. Joyce was a homemaker who enjoyed reading, working puzzles, and telling stories to her grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, July 13, 2012, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Don Rivers and Brother Mitch Roe officiating. Burial will follow in the Pennington Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Lyndon Black, Terry Barker, Steve Barker, Jamie Pennington, Jay Pennington, Jack Pennington, and Ron Clatos.
