Obituary

Josephine Naomi Shelley Pettit, age 83, of Grange City, passed away Thursday, November 27, 2014, at the Fleming County Hospital in Flemingsburg. She was born on February 2, 1931, in Montgomery County, to the late Carlos and Lula Branham Shelley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Daisy McCarty. Her husband of 55 years, Robert Edmond 'Bob' Pettit, passed away February 7, 2006. Mrs. Pettit is survived by two daughters, Tresia (Adrian) Swain of Morehead, and Melinda (Dr. Jim) Rollins of Mt. Sterling; two sons, Randall Pettit of Morehead, and Anthony 'Tony' Pettit of Grange City; six grandchildren, Gabe Swain, Luke Swain, Travis Pettit, Lacy Pettit, Evan Rollins and Jared Rollins; and two great granddaughters, Lula Swain and Sophia Pettit. Other survivors include four brothers, Billy Shelley of Paris, Marvin Shelley of North Middletown, Kenneth Shelley of Mt. Sterling, and Jerry Shelley of South Carolina; two sisters, Betty Ferguson of Middletown, Ohio, and Sue Elam of Paris; and one special daughter-in-law, Regina Pettit of Morehead. Josephine grew up on a farm in Montgomery County. The oldest of eight children, she left school after 10th grade to help the family, and remained their loving 'big sister'. Married in 1951, she relocated to Fleming County where she and Bob raised their four children. Eventually she went to work as a binder for the US Shoe Corporation until she retired in the 1990s. Late in life she joined up with a group of area friends, informally known as 'the widows club,' who met regularly for excursions, laughter, and lunch. The past few years she was active with Senior Citizens, riding the bus to Flemingsburg at least twice a week to eat, talk, laugh, and shop, and to walk a mile each time she went. She was a brilliant seamstress and an accomplished quilt maker, and was passionate about her family, gardening, cooking, and canning. Meals at her house featured more dishes than could fit on the table; family gatherings were a taste sensation. In 2004, a basement photograph of her canned goods was featured on the Traveling Exhibitions web site of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. A modest, soft-spoken woman, Josephine delighted in giving to others and will be remembered for her loving, personal warmth, her generosity, and for a smile that would light up a room, which made life brighter for all who came in contact with her. The arrival of two great-granddaughters further lit up her own life during her final year. She passed away the morning of November 27th, Thanksgiving Day, as the first of her new 'babies' turned one. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2014, at Hutton Funeral Home with Brother Billie Wagoner and Adam Hawkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Gabe Swain, Luke Swain, Travis Pettit, Lacy Pettit, Dick Adams, Ricky Lewis, Paul Taylor, Randy Hawkins, and Larry Catching. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2014, at Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
