Josephine Burton Carter, age 75, of Beartown Ridge Road in Elliott County, passed away Sunday, April 26, 2026, at her son Jason's residence.
She was born March 15, 1951, in Morehead, a daughter of the late James Melvin Burton and Zora Hall Burton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Burl Kenneth Carter, who passed away November 26, 2015; three half-sisters, Shirlda Davis, Gladys Courson, and Leona Henderson; and one half-brother, James Burton.
Josephine is survived by three sons, Jason (Tara) Carter, Carson Carter, and Adam (Shirley) Carter, all of Olive Hill; 11 grandchildren, Carson Carter, Brandon Carter, Austin Carter, Joshua Carter, Kourtney Carter, Zachary Carter, Rechell Carter, Kayden Carter, Tyler Carter, Jesse Skaggs, and Michael Skaggs; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are two sisters, Violet Carrol of Morehead and Lydia Harper of Alliance, Ohio; a special niece, Leona Sue Eckman; several nieces and nephews; as well as other extended family members and friends.
Josephine was a homemaker and a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She attended New Haven Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed fishing, going to yard sales, and attending church. Most of all, she loved children and spending time with her family. One of her most recent highlights was a trip to Gatlinburg, Tennessee, where she delighted in seeing a bear. She will be forever remembered and greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2026, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Rick Leadingham and Brother Burris Leadingham officiating. Burial will follow in the John Carter Cemetery in Elliott County.
Pallbearers will be Brandon Carter, Austin Carter, Josh Carter, Zachary Carter, Tyler Carter, and Rodney Wagoner. Honorary pallbearers will be Kayden Carter, Bryson Carter, Liam Carter, and Aaron Sayler.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
