John Devlyon Barker, age 93, of Short Street, Morehead, Kentucky, Pearl Harbor survivor, well-known businessman and community volunteer, passed away Monday, December 6, 2010, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born October 14, 1917, at Gimlet, Kentucky, in Elliott County, he was the son of the late John S. and Lyda Margaret Sparks Barker. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and five sisters. John D. is survived by his wife of 58 years, Pearl Dean Lewis Barker, whom he married December 6, 1952; one son, Devlyon Scott Barker and wife Vanessa Francine (Fran) Barker; and two grandsons, Brandon Scott Barker and wife Brandy and step granddaughter Shelby, and Logan Seth Barker, all of Morehead, Kentucky. Other survivors include numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. John D., a Pearl Harbor survivor, volunteered for the Army in 1940 and served until1945. Assigned to the 251st Post Artillery Anti-aircraft Unit at Molokai near Pearl Harbor, Sgt. Barker was in charge of an 18-man gun crew. He also saw duty in several other battles in the South Pacific including Fiji, Guadalcanal Island, and Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. For his service in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, he was awarded a Bronze Star Medal, a Ribbon with two Bronze Stars, a Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, and a Good Conduct Ribbon. John D. and his wife Pearl returned to Pearl Harbor in 2002, the only time he visited since the war. John D.-s story is featured in Patriots & Heroes: Eastern Kentucky Soldiers of WW II by Jack D. Ellis. In 1972, John D. retired as an agent for the Commonwealth Life Insurance Company after 18 years of service. As a young man, he worked in the coal mines in West Virginia and later was employed by the Semet-Solvay Company in Montgomery County, West Virginia, R. F. Stiner in Huntington, West Virginia, and Ruby Smith Ford Garage in Olive Hill, Kentucky. John D. was very active in community and church activities. He served as chairman of the American Red Cross for Rowan County for 11 years and continued to volunteer after that. He was a 65-year member and Past Master of Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 and a longtime member of Morehead American Legion Post No. 126, where he served on the Honor Guard for 12 years. He was a member of the Sharkey Freewill Baptist Church. His dedicated service to others will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, December 9, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Harley Sexton, Jr., and Elder Cephas Littleton officiating. Burial will follow in the Barker Cemetery in Elliott County, Kentucky, with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers will be Frank Harper, J. C. Whitt, Charles Ray Mobley, Russell Harper, David Harper, Danny Castle and Franklin Phillips. Visitation is from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2010. Masonic rites will be conducted Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. by Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sharkey Freewill Baptist Church, for the Children-s Backpack Program, 4895 KY Hwy. 801 North, Morehead KY 40351. Visitation: Wednesday, December 8, 2010, 5 pm- 9 pm Funeral: Thursday, December 9, 2010 at 11 am Interment: Barker Cemetery, Elliott County, KY
