Obituary

John Edward Burns, Sr., 97, of Merritt Island, FL, went home to be with the Lord on January 20, 2014 in Florida. He was born on October 5, 1916 in Hitchens, KY, the son of the late Denny Clay and Carrie Lee (Cartee) Burns. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 68 years, Lula Louise Burns. Mr. Burns is survived by a daughter, Dayna Elizabeth (Burns) Martin and husband Doug of Merritt Island, FL, and a son, John Edward Burns, Jr. and wife Barbara of Dunedin, FL. He had 3 grandchildren: John Edward Burns, III (deceased); Eric Thomas Burns (deceased); and Karen Ann (Martin) Damers, and 6 great-grandchildren. He had 8 brothers and sisters: Thomas Burns of Morehead, KY (deceased); Donald Burns of Merritt Island, FL (deceased); Shirley Baldridge of Clearfield, KY; Opal Calhoun of Grayson, KY; Elbert Burns (deceased); Bill Burns (deceased); Paul Burns (deceased); and Frank Burns (deceased). Mr. Burns was a World War II veteran, serving in the US Navy. He was a Security Police Criminal Investigator, retired from Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. He lived in Flemingsburg, KY after his retirement and moved to Merritt Island, FL in 2000. John was a child of God and a member of Poplar Plains Christian Church. He taught Sunday School for many years. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Jack Hinton officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Visitation for Mr. Burns will be from 11 a.m. until the funeral service at 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Visitation: Saturday, January 25, 2014, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Funeral: Saturday, January 25, 2014, at 1 p.m. Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens
