Obituary

John D. Barnett, age 74, of Brown Ridge, Morehead, passed away Saturday, October 31, 2015, at his residence. Born July 7, 1941, in Rowan County, he is the son of Cledith Mays Barnett Hanshaw of Morehead and the late Emil Barnett. Besides his father, he was preceded in death by one brother, Glennis Barnett, and one son, Mark A. Barnett, who passed away September 21, 1999. John D. is survived by his wife of 54 years, Carolyn Trent Barnett, whom he married April 4, 1961; one son, J. D. Barnett of Morehead; six grandchildren, Shawna (James) Cantrell, Crystal Barnett, Jonathan Barnett, Tyler (Whitney) Barnett, Dwight (Courtney) Barnett, and Tiffany (Jeremiah) McGlone; and six great grandchildren, Chandler Cantrell, Haley Barnett, Eli Barnett, Ava Barnett, Aubrey Barnett, and Noah Barnett; his mother, Cledith Mays Barnett Hanshaw; extended family and friends. He also leaves behind his constant companion and special dog, Candy. John D. was a graduate of the Police Academy in the Department of Criminal Justice Training at Eastern Kentucky University and was a law enforcement officer for 36 years. He served in the Police Department at Morehead State University from 1974 until his retirement in 1998. Following retirement, he joined the Rowan County Sheriff's Office, where he worked until 2010. John D. also owned and operated Barnett & Sons store and enjoyed farming, raising tobacco, and cattle. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, and friend, who will be sadly missed. John D. was a member of the Apostolic Tabernacle of Jesus Christ in Elliottville. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Arnold Ison and Elder Clyde Mays, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in the Barnett Family Cemetery on Brown Ridge. Pallbearers: Jack Carter, Mark Cline, Gary Messer, Joe Cline, Rita Harris, and James Damron. Honorary pallbearers: Jerry Stamper, Billy Ray Goodan, Matt Sparks, Donnie Porter, Clifford Porter, David Howard, and MSU Police Department co-workers. Visitation is after 4 p.m. Monday, November 2, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
