Obituary

Joe J. Mauk, age 90, of Forest Hills Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2010, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. He was born January 27, 1920, at Stark, Kentucky, in Elliott County, son of the late John Bunion Mauk and Amanda Victoria Binion Mauk. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hammond Mauk on July 12, 2008, and a son, Samuel Gerald (Jerry) Mauk on October 20, 1986. Joe is survived by one son, Michael Joe Mauk of Pell City, Alabama; one daughter, Karan Lenora Mauk Fouch of Morehead, Kentucky; one sister, Mary Ann Clark of Farmers, Kentucky; 5 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Joe served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired from the U.S. Forest Service, Morehead Ranger District, after 36 years of service. During his time with the Forest Service, he helped build Tater Knob Tower and helped with the construction of Cave Run Lake. He became a volunteer member of the Morehead Fire Department in 1941 and retired as Fire Chief in 1976. He was a charter member of the Morehead Lions Club and a member of Morehead American Legion Post No. 126 and Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 for more than fifty years. He was a proud member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Camp No. 578. Well known for his garden produce, Joe also enjoyed woodworking. He grew up in the Baptist church and was a member of Sharkey Freewill Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Harley Sexton, Jr., officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery with full military honors conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126 and Masonic services by Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654. Pallbearers will be members of the Morehead Fire Department. Visitation is from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 21, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. Visitation: Tuesday, September 21, 2010, 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Funeral: Wednesday, September 22, 2010, at 2 p.m. Interment: Brown Cemetery
