Joe David Colson, 88, of Olympia, Kentucky, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Menifee Meadows in Frenchburg.
Born July 29, 1937, in Manchester, Kentucky, he was the son of the late David Gillis Colson and Pearl Cottingim Colson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Samson Colson; sisters, Mary Nancy Lunsford, Elizabeth Joyce (and husband Buddy), Ruth Asher, and Virginia Wherle; and a stepdaughter, Debbie Batterson.
Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 49 years, Theda Marie Elkins Colson, whom he married on August 6, 1976; four children, Ward Wayne Colson of Richmond, Indiana, David Y. Colson and Tammy Colson, both of Hamilton, Ohio, and Dean G. Colson of Mason, Ohio; one stepson, Freddie Gerald Blevins of Hamilton, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by one brother, John Colson of Davenport, Florida; one sister, Marilyn LaPrade of Martinsville, Virginia; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
A proud U.S. Marine veteran of the Vietnam Era, Joe later retired as a supervisor with the City of Hamilton, Ohio, Health Department. A lifelong lover of music, he was a drummer with several bands in both Ohio and Florida. He was also an amateur radio operator. Joe attended Mud Lick Church of God and was a member of American Legion Post 303 in Bonita Springs, Florida. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, August 25, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Mark Caldwell officiating. Immediately following the service, Morehead American Legion Post 126 will present full military honors at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Downs Cemetery in Bath County.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, August 25, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
