James Hayden McCarty, Sr., age 72, of Morehead, KY, passed away Monday, November 15, 2010, at his residence. Born February 20, 1938, in Morgan County, KY, he was the son of the late James E. McCarty and Nancy Ellen McKenzie McCarty. He was also preceded in death by two half brothers, Dallas Francis McCarty and William Douglas (PeeWee) McCarty. Jim is survived by his wife, Etta Jane Caudill McCarty, whom he wed November 23, 1978; three sons, James H. McCarty Jr. of Flatwoods, KY, Billy Jay McCarty of Columbus, OH, Michael Todd McCarty of Green Bank, WV; two daughters, Kathleen -Kathy- Adams of Ashland, KY, and Suzzana -Suzie- Furnish of Flatwoods, KY; one stepson, L. Scott Cassity of Knoxville, TN; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. Other survivors include his stepmother, Ida Estep McCarty of Albany, KY; four half brothers, Bruce H. McCarty of Burkesville, KY, Chester M. McCarty of Getaway, OH, James Edward McCarty Jr. of TN, David McCarty of Albany, KY; one half sister, Carol Sparks of Albany, KY; and other devoted family and friends. Jim served his country 8 - years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, was a former employee of AK Steel in Ashland, and survived the Great Alaska Earthquake in 1964. Through the years he was a dedicated volunteer to many organizations including Shelter of Hope in Ashland, United Methodist Food Pantry in Cannonsburg, Christian Social Services and St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. He was also a member of Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Jim was a deacon in the First Christian Church in Ashland and was currently serving as a deacon in the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Morehead. Jim enjoyed all that nature had to offer, especially fishing, and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. A Celebration of Life will be conducted 1 p.m. Thursday, November 18, 2010, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) with William Oder and Pastor Molly Smothers officiating. Burial will follow in Caudill Cemetery on W. Main Street with full military rites conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers: Sean McCarty, Dallas Adams, Jeremy Westfall, Ronnie Caudill, Hargis (Tumpy) Howard, Aron Caudill. Visitation is from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, November 17, 2010, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead and from noon until 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church Living Memorial Fund, 227 E. Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351 or a charity of one-s choice. Visitation: Wednesday, November 17, 5-8 pm at funeral home; and Thursday noon-1 pm at church Funeral: Thursday, November 18, 2010, 1 p.m., First Christian Church Interment: Caudill Cemetery
