Obituary

James Kindrich Sergent, known to all simply as "Sarge," age 62, passed away unexpectedly at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky, on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.

Sarge was born on September 28, 1962, to the late Farmer and Carma Lou Sergent, in Shepherdsville, Kentucky. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Sagle and Sandy O'Connor of Ohio and father-in-law, Billy Whitt of West Liberty, Kentucky.  He is survived by three siblings, Luena (Granville) Brown of Shelby, Ohio, Tommy (Cathy) Sergent of Eddy, Texas, and John (Christie) Sergent of Las Vegas, Nevada; mother-in-law, Geraldine Whitt, aunt, Helen Lewis, and special cousin, Ricky (Charlene) Lewis, all of West Liberty, Kentucky.

On May 18, 1997, Sarge and Denine Rose Whitt were united in marriage.  Together they built a life they loved and were blessed with two sons, Jacob Eugene (Camille) Sergent, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Kaleb Thomas Sergent of West Liberty, Kentucky.

While attending Morehead State University, Sarge pledged Theta Chi Fraternity, Eta Gamma Chapter, in 1983.  Little did he know at that time, his tenure as an active member would define the true brotherhood of Theta Chi for decades to come.  For his dedication to the values of Eta Gamma and the lasting impression he left, the chapter later honored Sarge by presenting the "James K. Sergent Brotherhood Award" to active members of the chapter who carry out the meaning of being a resolute man in the same way Sarge did.  For this, he was so deeply humbled and enjoyed watching active brothers receive his award. He also was honored to be selected as the last Big Brother to Delta Zeta Sorority, Kappa Tau Chapter.

Sarge carried the values of Theta Chi with him into his career as a police officer.  He began his journey as a public servant at Morehead State University Police Department and retired in 2013 from the Morehead City Police Department.  After that, Sarge served the students of the Rowan County School System as a School Resource Officer until 2015.  Serving others, lending a helping hand, and keeping everyone safe was always Sarge's top priority.

Retiring really wasn't what Sarge was ready to do; however, his health forced him into it at an early age.  Beginning January 29, 2016, Sarge began renal dialysis at the Fresenius Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky, where he was in the very best of care.  During this time, Sarge began a new hobby that he dearly loved.  He became a ham radio operator, known as KN4RDT, on the air.  The Morehead Amateur Ham Radio Club was near and dear to his heart.  He has proudly served as treasurer to the club since 2022.

To know Sarge was to love him.  He never met a stranger and always had a kind word for anyone he met.  To say he will be missed is an understatement to the impact he had on all who knew him.

A celebration of life will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals with Brother J. R. Keeton and Brother Donald Cox officiating. Darick Brown will lead the Theta Chi Chapter Eternal Ceremony.  Immediately following the ceremony, a funeral procession will follow through downtown Morehead and return to the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Cooper Fleming, Conner Fleming, Ricky Fleming, Toby Gardner, David Sexton, and Zack Highley.  Honorary pallbearers will be active and alumni members of Theta Chi Fraternity, Eta Gamma Chapter.

Burial will be at a later date at Cox Cemetery #2 in West Liberty, Kentucky.

Visitation for Sarge will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
