James C. 'Jimmy' Helphinstine, age 68, of Wyoming Road, Owingsville, passed away Tuesday, November 29, 2016, at the U. K. Medical Center in Lexington. Born August 17, 1948, in Fleming County, he was a son of the late Everett Eugene and Mary Opal Butler Helphinstine. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Maira Sue Denton Helphinstine; two daughters, Melanie (Jerry) McNabb of Olympia and Carla Otis of Mt. Sterling; one brother, Michael (Judy) Helphinstine of Ewing; one sister, Linda Barber of Lexington; two grandchildren, Mya McNabb and Gavin Otis; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was a graduate of Fleming County High School and was drafted and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from Hobart's in Mt. Sterling after 21 years of service and in 2011 he retired from Blackburn Correctional Complex in Lexington after 20 years of service as a correctional officer. An avid outdoorsman, he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing, but his greatest love was his family, especially his grandchildren. He also enjoyed farming, carpentry, and gardening. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2016, at Hutton Funeral Home with the Rev. Chris Bailey officiating. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers: Allen Thomas, Joey Thomas, Michael Helphinstine, Larry Gene Barber, Ernie Conyers, Glen Conyers, Eric Lewis and Jerry McNabb Honorary pallbearers: Willis Denton, Donnie Denton, Ricky Lewis, Ossie Prater, Ronnie Bailey, Roger Stephens, Danny Armitage, Edward Sorrell, Paul Conyers, and Eddy Helphinstine Visitation is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, December 2, 2016, at Hutton Funeral Home in Hillsboro.
