Obituary

James Thomas Holbrook, of Fort Myers, Florida, also known as Jim Tom or J.T., age 73, passed away on November 30, 2025.

James was born in Panama on May 1, 1952, to John Will Holbrook, Jr., and Nan (Browning) Holbrook.

In 1970, James graduated from University Breckinridge School in Morehead where he was selected Mr. Breckinridge and was a multi-sport athlete. Following high school, James attended Lindsey Wilson University and was a member of the basketball team. After two years, he transferred to Morehead State University, where he earned his bachelor's degree.

After college, James soon began a career in banking. He would continue in the banking industry for many years until he started his own mortgage company. He built Financial One—which eventually merged and became Bluegrass Mortgage—into  a successful local business in the Lexington community. James moved to Fort Myers in 2006. His last role before retirement was with a local start-up bank, Preferred Community Bank. He helped develop and lead their mortgage division. Preferred Community grew from a single location to a multi-branch bank that was eventually purchased by Achieva Credit Union.

James excelled as an athlete growing up. He remained active for most of his adult life and took an avid interest in golf. He loved Derby Day and UK sports. He was also heavily involved in the MSU Alumni Association and served as its President for several years.

Later in his life, one of the things he took most pride and enjoyment in was being a loving grandfather. James is survived by his son, Braddock Rankley Holbrook, Sr. (Erica), and their three sons: Braddock Rankley Holbrook, Jr., William Myers Holbrook, and Harris David Holbrook. He is also survived by his two brothers, John Will Holbrook III (Yvonne) and Samuel Woodford Holbrook (Sheri). In addition, he is survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
