Obituary

J. D. Plank, age 77, of Kirkland, Indiana, formerly of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Friday, July 16, 2010, at St. Elizabeth Hospital East in Lafayette, Indiana. Born September 15, 1932, in Rowan County, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Elmer and Cora Mae Esham Plank. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Guy Plank, Homer Plank and Ray Plank; a grandson, Christopher John Robinson; and a great granddaughter; Aiyana Gauvin. His wife, Mary Jane Schimmel Plank, passed away in 1986. J. D. is survived by three children, John Dewayne Plank and wife Cathy of Darlington, Indiana, Patty Jean Robinson and husband William of Lafayette, Indiana, and Cora Louise Gibbs and husband Michael, of Franklin, Indiana; one brother, Warren Plank of Morehead, Kentucky; one sister, Dixie Plank Blythe of Morehead, Kentucky; five grandchildren; and 5 great grandchildren. Mr. Plank was reared and educated in Rowan County, Kentucky, attended Eastern Kentucky University, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a former one-room school teacher at the Hardyman School on North Fork in Rowan County. He retired as an operating engineer in 1994 and was a member of Operating Engineers Local 103 in Indianapolis, Indiana. J. D. was a devoted father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing cards. Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2010, at Myers Mortuary in Lebanon, Indiana. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at the funeral home with Chuck Hickson, Phil Parsons, and Mary E. Gibbs officiating. Burial will be at the Whiteman Cemetery in Michigantown, Indiana. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of J. D. Plank may be made the charity of the donor-s choice. Visitation: Monday, July 19, 2010, 4 pm - 8 pm Funeral: Tuesday, July 20, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. Interment: Whiteman Cemetery, Michigantown, Indiana
