Obituary

J. D. Hackney, age 79, of Christy Creek Road, Morehead, beloved husband of Joyce, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

Born August 7, 1946, in Perry County, he was the son of the late Talmadge and Polly Isom Hackney. He was also preceded in death by a great-grandchild, Kainon Hackney, and four sisters.

In addition to his loving wife Joyce, J. D. is survived by two sons, Darrin (Amy) Hackney of Grayson, and Jason (Megan) Hackney of Morehead; seven grandchildren, Jamie Hackney, Joshua Hackney, Ally Hackney, Marleigh Hackney, Joel Hackney, Jack Smith, and Brody Smith; and five great-grandchildren.

Other survivors include three brothers, Tom Hackney of Germantown, Kentucky, Joe Hackney of Milford, Ohio, and George Hackney of Nancy, Kentucky; four sisters, Barbara Howard of Independence, Kentucky, Maxine Howard and Connie Gripshover, both of Milford, Ohio, and Opal Howard of West Liberty; as well as a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family members.

Anyone who knew J. D. knows he loved his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He deeply loved his family and his church family, and he never met a stranger. Many people knew J. D. through his various occupations over the years. He worked at a car dealership, as a plumber, HVAC technician, HVAC instructor, and served 26 years of dedicated service as a Rowan County Deputy Coroner.

J. D. loved gardening, woodworking, and spending time on his tractor, bulldozer, or side-by-side. He also enjoyed teaching — whether it was HVAC systems or how to plant turnips.  J.D. shared his knowledge with joy and generosity, and will be greatly missed.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at Trinity Christian Fellowship, 537 West Main Street, Morehead, Kentucky, with Pastor Wade Muncy and Brother Tom Hackney officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens.
