He was born October 30, 1923, in Morehead, a son of the late John and Eva Sexton Allen. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. Following his service in the U.S. Army during World War II and his graduation from the University of Kentucky, he took over the business founded by his father in 1908. Later he was joined by his brother Bob in operating the grocery from 1951 to 1989. From 1989 the grocery operated under another name until Allen's IGA reopened in 2012 in the same West Main Street location. The Allens always managed their businesses on site, and on a daily basis enjoyed greeting customers and teaching the many high school and college students they hired the importance of a strong work ethic. In addition to the original grocery, two other stores were opened: Allen's IGA on East Main Street and Allen's IGA in Olive Hill. The Morehead Plaza, a shopping center adjacent to the West Main Street IGA, was also developed. Always a staunch supporter of downtown Morehead and Rowan County, Hoodie was actively involved in various organizations. He was a past president of the Chamber of Commerce, was on the board of directors for Cave Run Marina, served on a committee instrumental in establishing Heritage Place, and was a former member of the board of directors of the People's Bank of Morehead. He was also recognized for charitable contributions to civic groups, local schools and Morehead State University.
