Jr.
Jul 20, 1925 — May 21, 2025
Herman Staton, Jr., age 99, of Greenbend Road, Morehead, passed away Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at his residence.
Born July 20, 1925, in Bath County, he was a son of the late Herman Staton and Iva McLain Staton. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by special companion of 56 years, Dorothy Williams; two sons, Gerald and Robert Staton; five brothers, Velmond, Marvin, Arvie, William and David Staton; and three sisters, Francis Caudill, Norma Myers, and Elvera Ayersman
Herman is survived by two sons, Roy Staton and Phillip Staton, both of Bath County; six daughters, Mary Hamm of Ewing, Debbie Hamm of South Carolina, Peggy Spurlock and Linda Crouch, both of Bath County, Lillian Jones and Clara Knipp, both of Morehead; one sister, Carmie Jean Estlack of Southington, Ohio, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and other extended family members.
Junior was born and raised in Bath County. He attended school in a little one-room schoolhouse up the road from where they lived. He loved working with mules, plowing the fields and working with his dad.
At the age of 18, Junior was drafted and entered the military in October 1943. He went to Europe and was a participant in the Invasion of Normandy (D-Day) in June 1944. Junior was on the front lines in four major battles until May 1945, when he captured and held captive for six months. He earned the European African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon w/4 Bronze Stars; Good Conduct Medal; Purple Heart; and the Victory World War II Medal. He was a strong man.
After returning home from the service, he began working in the log woods. That was something he loved doing his whole life. He recently was cutting trees and busting wood at the age of 99. Junior loved his family, especially his kids and grandkids. He was a loving and kindhearted man with lots of patience and would help anyone in need. Junior attended church with his grandson Billy every Sunday in Bath County.
The family was looking forward to celebrating his 100th birthday, but for some reason God decided to take him home. He is going to be greatly missed.
