Helen Pruitt Johnson McBrayer, age 83, of Meadow Lane, Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2007, at the St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. She was born August 31, 1924, in New Boston, Ohio, and was the daughter of the late Wallace Lee and Carrie Adams Pruitt. Helen and her parents moved to Ashland, Kentucky, when she was an infant and she was raised there. Helen attended Berea College, graduated from Morehead State University with a Master of Education degree, and completed additional graduate hours at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio, and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. A public school teacher and administrator for many years, Helen retired from the Middletown, Ohio, school system. Her first husband, the late Rev. Ramah Johnson, was a former pastor of various churches in Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, and Helen was a former missionary to the West Indies (affiliated with the First Church of God, Anderson, IN headquarters). After her marriage to James Earl McBrayer, Helen became very active in the Morehead First Church of God and the community. A devoted Christian, she was a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Board of Trustees of the church, and held various offices in Women of the Church of God. She was a member of the Kentucky Retired Teachers Association and Kappa Delta Pi (honor society in education). Her husband, James Earl McBrayer, a well-known businessman and community leader, preceded her in death on January 28, 2002. In addition to her parents and husbands, Mrs. McBrayer was preceded in death by one sister, Dixie L. Swift, and two stepchildren, Phyllis McBrayer Dixon and Hildreth McBrayer Chapman. Survivors include two sisters, Jo Ann Ramey of Ashland, Kentucky, and Judy (David) Hill of South Carolina; three nieces, Kevin (Ed) Frame, Leslye (Randy) Mason, Susan (Mike) Reliford, all of Ashland, Kentucky; three nephews, Kyle Ramey, Charles R. -Chuck- Ramey and Grant Ramey, all of Ashland, Kentucky; and several great nieces and nephews. Also surviving are four step-children, Pauline McBrayer Ellington of North Carolina, Jack McBrayer of Morehead, Kentucky, Frances McBrayer Ausbun of Indiana, Phil McBrayer of Lexington, Kentucky; 18 step-grandchildren; and 36 step-great grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday, September 7, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Pastor Allan Hutchinson, Dr. John Conley, The Rev. Brian McBrayer, and the Rev. Carolyn DeHoff officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashland, Kentucky. Pallbearers will be Randy Mason, Charles R. -Chuck- Ramey, Kyle Ramey, Eddie Frame, and Mike Reliford. Honorary pallbearers will be the men and women of the Morehead First Church of God. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Thursday, September 6, 2007, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Gideons International Visitation: Thursday, September 6, 2007, after 5 p.m. Funeral: Friday, September 7, 2007, at 11 a.m. Interment: Rose Hill Cemetery, Ashland, Kentucky
