Dr. Harry Calvin Mayhew, age 75, of Skaggs Road, Morehead, passed away Friday, August 21, 2015, at his residence. Born January 8, 1940, in Paintsville, he was a son of the late John Burton Mayhew and Eva Little Preston Mayhew. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, John Burton Mayhew II, and three sisters, Jean Busby, Betty Lou Helton, and Carolyn Sue Jones. While doing photography, Harry met the love of his life, Ann LaVaughn Sandifer, who became his devoted wife of 48 years. They were married September 5, 1964; Ann passed away October 31, 2012. He is survived by one daughter, Cara A. Mayhew Cash of Morehead; two grandchildren, Taylor Lauran Cash and Turner Anthony Cash; and nieces, nephews, cousins, great nieces and nephews as well as a loving family of in-laws. Harry graduated from Paintsville High School and received a bachelor's degree and two master's degrees from Morehead State University. He received the Ed.D. from Ball State University. A retired administrator and faculty member, Dr. Mayhew held various positions during his 37 years at MSU. He served as director of alumni relations, director of university services, associate dean of academic programs, and associate professor of education. He taught courses in journalism, English, and professional education; and, in addition, authored articles published in academic journals and belonged to many professional associations including Phi Kappa Phi, Kappa Delta Pi, and Phi Delta Kappa. Harry was a longtime member and past president of the Rowan County Historical Society, a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Optimist Club of Morehead, and MSU Alumni Association. Harry attended Morehead First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for more than 50 years and served as a deacon. Harry had a passion for history and literature and a real love for MSU, his church, and his family. A Celebration of Life will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Dr. J. D. Reeder officiating and Dr. Roger C. Meade, Dr. Gary North, and the Rev. Merry Jones participating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers: Robert Lynn Busby, Mark Etherton, Mickey Reffitt, Turner Cash, Andy Case, Dr. Jack Whidden Visitation is 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351 In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the Breckinridge Commemorative Scholarship Endowment Fund, MSU Foundation, Inc., Palmer Development House, Morehead State University, Morehead, KY 40351.
