Dr. Harold Edward Holbrook, 86, of Woodson Bend Resort, Bronston, Kentucky, formerly of Morehead, Kentucky, husband of Jane Young Holbrook, passed away Monday, May 21, 2012, at Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. Born August 23, 1925, in Morehead, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Roy Ernest -Pappy- Holbrook and Carrie Lucille Caudill. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister, Ralph Holbrook, Robert -Bob- Holbrook, and Helen Parard. Harold is survived by Jane, his loving wife of 65 years (a daughter of the late Allie and Mary Young), whom he wed December 27, 1946; one son, Eddie (Janie) Holbrook of Morehead, Kentucky, Cindy Holbrook (Charles R.) Combs of Lexington, Kentucky, and Terri Holbrook (John W.) Tuttle of Somerset, Kentucky; 8 grandchildren, Kris Alderman, Tripp Holbrook, Kari Flanders, Ryan Combs, John Holbrook, Ann Cook, Jay Tuttle, and Lauren Tuttle; 12 great grandchildren, Ty and Chase Alderman, Audrey, Drew, Allen, and Clay Holbrook, Allee and Tristan Flanders, Jacob and Lucas Holbrook, Caitlin Combs, and Charlie Cook. Dr. Holbrook, a well-known dentist, businessman, and community leader, graduated from Morehead High School, completed his pre-dental studies at Morehead State University and received his D.M.D. from the University of Louisville. He practiced dentistry in Morehead for 40 years, and prior to that was a dentist for two years while serving in the U.S. Army-Air Force in Alaska. He was a member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Dental Association, Kentucky Dental Association, and Academy of General Dentistry. In 1963, he started a successful fast food restaurant, The Dairy Cheer, located adjacent to the campus of Morehead State University. Also involved in various community organizations, he served as president of Morehead Kiwanis Club and was a trustee for Lee Cemetery, a position he held for numerous years. Following retirement from his dental practice, he and Jane relocated to Bronston, where they enjoyed golfing and traveling. He was affectionately known as -Grandaddy- by family and friends. Harold, a lifelong member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), served on many boards and committees in his home churches in Morehead and Somerset, as well as Sarasota, Florida. Visitation is 4 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the First Christian Church, 1115 KY 39, Somerset, Kentucky. A funeral service will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday with Elder Doug Buis officiating. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 25, 2012, at Lee Cemetery, Morehead, Kentucky, with Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Pallbearers: Grandsons and nephews Dr. Mark Holbrook and Harold Leroy Holbrook. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Living Memorial Trust Fund, 227 E. Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Building Fund, P. O. Box 64, Somerset, KY 42502, or Beneva Christian Church, 4835 Beneva Road, Sarasota, FL 34233 Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351.
