Jul 18, 1935 — Apr 15, 2008
Dr. George S. Tapp of Morehead passed away at his home on Tuesday, April 15, 2008, following a long illness. He was 72. Soft spoken, polite, and exhibiting a keen dry wit, George was a gentleman in every respect. George was born on July 18, 1935, in Winchester and worked the family farm while growing up. While still very young, George developed a lifelong passion for education, reading every book available in the school library, and later becoming the first of his family to attend college. After graduating from Clark County High School in 1953, George attended Transylvania University receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology and a Master-s degree in education in 1966. He subsequently obtained his PhD. in psychology from the University of Kentucky. George served as professor of psychology at Morehead State University for 33 years and spent two decades as Chairman of the Department of Psychology. In addition, George provided testing services for six area school systems including Rowan County. Until shortly before his death, George also served as a consultant for the Commonwealth of Kentucky performing evaluations for disability applicants. George is survived by his wife of 51 years, the former Elizabeth -Betty- Ann Lipps of Lexington, and two brothers, Ken and Maynard Tapp. George and Betty have three children, Roy Michael Tapp who resides in Winchester with his wife Delora, David A. Tapp who resides in Somerset with his wife Patty, and Laryn Ann Martin who lives in Morehead with her husband, Shannon. George is also survived by four grandchildren, Adam Tapp, Katherine Elizabeth Tapp, Adrian Johanna Tapp and Morgan Hunter Tapp, as well as two great grandchildren, Claudia and Elliot. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Tapp and the former Alice Hunter, both of Winchester. George led an active life. Many college students were surprised by his athleticism on campus basketball courts. For many years, George also played tennis, racquetball and softball, but his interest in these sports all paled to his love of pick-up basketball.
