George Carlos Hill, age 91, of Morehead, Kentucky, husband of Jean Fielding Hill, passed away Friday, June 8, 2012, at Life Care Center of Morehead following a short illness. He was born March 15, 1921, in Huntington, West Virginia, to Dorothy Jonas Hill and Leroy Hill, Sr. When George was nine months old, his father passed away; and at age four, George and his family moved to Morehead. He graduated from the old Morehead High School where he played both basketball and football under Coach Roy -Pappy- Holbrook. George served four years in the U. S. Army during World War II and spent two years in the South Pacific. His unit was preparing to invade Japan when President Truman ordered the use of atomic bombs that ended the war. On Christmas Day, 1945, he was discharged from the Army in Louisville, Kentucky, and returned home to attend Morehead State College under the GI Bill. He met Jean Phyllis Fielding and they married November 7, 1946. George worked all of his adult life on Main Street in Morehead, Kentucky. He began at the Martindale Store and in 1957 started his own business, the Western Auto Store. In 1962, across the street from his original store, George constructed a new building which he and Jean occupied until they retired 44 years later. George was a well-known business and community leader. He served on the Morehead City Council and was instrumental in getting the Morehead area water supply. He was also a member of the Morehead Utility Plant Board and the Morehead-Lakeview Planning and Zoning Board for many years. He and his wife Jean served on Save the Old Rowan County Courthouse Committee and were influential in getting the Courthouse listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. He served on the Draft Board under President Ford and was also a Kentucky Colonel. George was a member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Morehead. He was the oldest member with tenure of 70 years of the Free and Accepted Masons Morehead Lodge No. 654. As a Mason, he earned the EA Degree on November 26, 1942; FC Degree, January 9, 1943; and MM Degree, February 13, 1943. George was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Jim Rose; brother, Leroy Hill; and sister, Dorothy Messer, along with their spouses. Besides his wife of 65 years Jean, he is survived by four children: George Carlos Hill Jr., and his wife Kay, of Milford, Kansas, along with his children, Christopher (Nissa) Hill, Ryan (Donna) Hill, and his stepchildren, Jacqueline and Frank; Rhonda Jean Hill Collier and her husband William, along with their children, Jennifer Collier (Brian) Fouch and Dr. Matthew Collier (Krista) all of Lexington, Kentucky; Sherry Ann Hill McEwan and her husband Robert, along with their children, Natalie (Matt) Dragovich, Jonathan (Nina) McEwan, and Mark McEwan, all of Cincinnati, Ohio; and Robert Matthew Hill and wife Evie, along with their children, Madeline and Sadie, all of Ashland, Kentucky. George is also survived by six great grandchildren. George loved and enjoyed his family and was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He will be missed. Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 2:30 p.m. Monday, June 11, 2012, at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), 227 East Main Street, Morehead, Kentucky. At 2:30 p.m., Morehead Masonic Lodge No. 654 will conduct Masonic services. A funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. with the Rev. Molly Smothers and Dr. Jack Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Lee Cemetery with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Pallbearers: Matthew Collier, Christopher Hill, Ryan Hill, Jonathan McEwan, Mark McEwan, Brian Fouch, Matthew Dragovich, Randy Day, Adam Day, Andrew Fouch. Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Christian Church of Morehead, KY, the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association. Visitation: Monday, May 11, 2012; 1-2:30; Masonic service, 2:30 p.m. Funeral: Monday, May 11, 2012, at 3 p.m., First Christian Church Interment: Lee Cemetery
