George Walter Atkins, age 101, of Farmers, Kentucky, passed away March 8, 2013, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born April 24, 1911, in Jacobs, Kentucky, to the late Benjamin Franklin Atkins and Amanda Porter Atkins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Jessie McFarland Atkins, and two daughters, Ramona Carol Menard and Jeanetta Kay Atkins. Surviving are four sons, Gary Leon Atkins and wife Betty of Wellford, South Carolina, Larry Wayne Atkins and wife Diana of Lexington, Kentucky, Barry Edward Atkins of Morehead, Kentucky, and Michael Steven and wife Lisa of Farmers, Kentucky; four daughters, Phyllis Gail Blevins of Clearfield, Kentucky, Evelyn June Lemaster of Farmers, Kentucky, Beverly Sue Bentley and husband Everett Ray of Morehead, and Marlene Faye Owens and husband Carl of Lexington, Kentucky; 11 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews, extended family, and friends. Mr. Atkins served in the Kentucky Army National Guard for four years. He was a former CSX railroad worker, manager of the Red Head Oil and Shell gas stations, and truck driver for Ruth Brothers and several other companies. He was a pilot and had owned Piper Cub and P-51 Mustang airplanes. Walter enjoyed playing country music on several instruments, although the steel guitar was his favorite. He also liked to work crossword puzzles and especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2013, at the Purvis Cemetery with his son Michael Atkins officiating. Mr. Atkins' grandchildren will serve as pallbearers: Brian Lee Blevins, Angela Dawn Eldridge, Jessica Dawn Buchanan, Mark Edward Atkins, Amanda Diane Riley, Kasey Michelle Owens, and Joshua Caleb Atkins. Honorary pallbearers are Judith Ann Adkins and Sandra Gay Blevins. Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, Morehead, Kentucky. Visitation: o visitation. Funeral: Monday, March 11, 2013, Graveside, Purvis Cemetery Interment: Purvis Cemetery, Big Brushy Road, Morehead
