Obituary

Dr. Gary Charles Cox, 79, of Rosenberg Drive, Morehead, Kentucky, Morehead State University Geography Professor Emeritus, passed away Monday, July 18, 2011, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Gary was born July 2, 1932, in Pound, Virginia, to James Wilburn and Edith Boggs Cox. The oldest of six children, he is survived by two brothers, Ronald Lee Cox of Lexington, South Carolina, and Giles Wayne Cox of Taylor Mill, Kentucky, and two sisters Joyce M. Cox and Nancy Louise Barda of Cape Coral, Florida. A brother, Paul W. Cox, preceded him in death. Gary is also survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Joan Brown Cox, a native of Trimble County, Kentucky; one daughter, Deborah Lynn Canales, and one grandson, Charles Edward Canales, both of Sugar Land, Texas. His only son, Gary Edward Cox, died September 10, 1984, while a doctoral student at the University of Oklahoma. Gary received his undergraduate degree from Morehead State University, his master-s from Clark University, Wooster, Massachusetts, which included a field research project in Puerto Rico, and his doctorate in geography from the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. He also attended the University of Maryland and Rutgers University in New Jersey Prior to joining the Morehead State University geography faculty in 1970, Gary taught high school in Carrolton, Kentucky, Medicine Lake, Montana, and Aberdeen, Maryland. He also taught at the University of Northern Colorado. During his more than twenty years at MSU, Dr. Cox was a Professor of Geography, served as Department Chair, and received the Outstanding Professor Award for Teaching. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served primarily in Korea from 1952-1954. Aside from his avocation, Volkswagen restoration, Gary was a member of the Morehead Veterans Board and for twenty years was a member of the Veterans Club. He was also a member of the Kentucky Geographers Club for over thirty years and a Kentucky Colonel. Gary really enjoyed the Fuzzy Duck Thursday morning get-togethers with fellow retired faculty and others. He was richly blessed to be a member of Morehead First Baptist Church. Visitation is from 6 - 9 p.m. Tuesday, July 19, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY. Funeral services will be conducted 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, 2011, at Morehead First Baptist Church with Dr. Don Mantooth officiating. Interment will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2011, at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested to Morehead First Baptist Church, 123 East Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351. Visitation: Tuesday, July 19, 2011, 6-9 p.m., Northcutt & Son Funeral: Wednesday, July 20, 2011, 7 p.m., First Baptist Church Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens
