Fred Warren Brown, Jr., age 57, of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, formerly of Morehead, Kentucky, passed away Thursday, July 21, 2011, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident while traveling in Powell County, Kentucky. He was born January 5, 1954, in Rowan County, Kentucky, and is the son of Fred Warren Brown, Sr., and Flossie Sparks Brown of Morehead, Kentucky. He is also survived by his wife Regina Lynn -Gina- Stanley Brown, whom he married December 20, 1975; two sons, Marcus Warren Brown and Matthew Logan Brown and his wife, Amy Christine; one grandson, Tyler Wayne Brown, all of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. Other survivors include three sisters and brothers-in-law, Teresa Marie and Rick Dumas of Grove City, Ohio, MaryAnn and Mike Kash of Morehead, Kentucky, and Penny and Bob Sahs of Morehead, Kentucky; several nieces and nephews; other family; and many friends. Fred graduated from Rowan County High School in 1971 and from Morehead State University in 1975, where he received a B.A. in literature and history. He was an author, historian, newspaper columnist, business owner, realtor, and community volunteer. A prolific writer, Fred authored and co-authored several historical books including Days of Anger, Days of Tears: The History of the Rowan County War; The Story of Two Kentucky Feuds; and Blood and Ashes: Notes on the Tolliver -Martin Feud and Aftermath; as well as Smoke in the Woods and Steam in the Heart, Life and Times Along the Morehead and North Fork Rails, and The Earth Endures. In addition, he composed and published numerous poems and songs. One particularly well-known song Fred wrote, recorded by Sasha Colette and called 'The Ballad of Nicole Penix Vanzant,- sought answers and justice in the cold-case death investigation of Nicole. This work was featured on many television stations, in various newspapers and other publications, and on YouTube.com. Fred, a community volunteer in various organizations, was the former president of Morehead-Rowan County Recycling Center, president of Clark Cemetery Association, and member of the Rowan County Historical Society. He also served on the Appalachian Celebration Board of Directors and was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts. Fred had been an employee and later became owner of American Office Supply and also founded White Crow Comics. He was currently a Realtor with C. Roger Lewis Agency; a writer for News Review, a regional newspaper; an advertising sales consultant; and most recently was collaborating with Steve Williams about his new company. Fred had great love for his family and always enthusiastically coordinated the annual Brown Family Reunion. Genealogy played an enormous role in Fred-s life and he believed everyone should know and understand their family roots. He was a loving husband, devoted father, adoring grandfather, and precious son and brother. A spiritual person, Fred often said, -God-s voice is wind I seek to understand.- Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, July 24, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with the Rev. James Wendell Clevinger officiating. Burial will follow in the Clark Cemetery. Pallbearers will be cousins Randy Brown, Jimmy Yoder, Dallas Brown, Harry Clark; nephews Todd Fannin, Jason Fannin, Jordan Bentley, Jared Hamm; and friends Steve Lewis and Steve Williams. Visitation is from 3 - 9 p.m. Saturday, July 23, 2011, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead.
