Obituary

Ersella Pelfrey Williams, age 101, of West Liberty, passed away Monday, August 25, 2014, at Edgewood Estates in Frenchburg, her home since June 10, 2010. Ersella (fondly called Ersell P) was born on November 23, 1912, at Laurel Fork in Morgan County, a daughter of Ollie and Martha Williams Pelfrey. Ollie was a mail carrier and ran a small country store. Martha helped with the store and took care of the family. Ersella was the second eldest of three children and attended a country school located on the family's property. In addition to her parents, Ersella was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan Williams, who passed away December 7, 2007; sister, Bertie Pelfrey Adkins; infant sister, Thelma Pelfrey; and son-in-law, Monroe Collins. On December 23, 1939, Ersella married Ivan Williams and moved to Ashland, where he worked at Armco Steel during World War II. The couple returned to Elkfork, in sight of Ersella's homeplace, where she lived for more than 60 years and raised the family. She was a homemaker and substitute Postmistress of the Elkfork Post Office. Throughout the years, Ersella's greatest joy has been her family. Always an humble person, she once said that she had asked God to let her live to raise her children, but that He had blessed her far beyond that request by allowing her to enjoy her granddaughter and her great grandchildren. Her pets were also considered family and brought her much joy until the end. Bleekie, a favorite cat, survives. As long as she was able, Ersella loved preparing wonderful home-cooked meals for the family, canning, and gardening. Ersella was of the Enterprise Baptist faith and a charter member of the Elkfork Community Church. She is survived by a daughter, Joyce Ivanell Bailey and husband Bob of West Liberty; a son, Daniel C. Williams and wife Helen of West Liberty; one granddaughter, Rebecca Joyce Collins Beard and husband Mark of Williamsport, PA; and four great grandchildren, Catherine, Caleb, Matthew, and Daniel Beard. Ersella was precious and dearly loved by her family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Thursday, August 28, 2014, at New Hope Baptist Church with Bro. Roger Ball and Bro. Rick Pelfrey officiating. Burial will follow at the Pelfrey Cemetery on Hwy. 172 in Morgan County. Pallbearers will be Jack Adkins, Ottis Conley, Trevor Howell, Donnie Pack, Leon Rissler, Linford Weaver, and Gary Williams. Visitation is after 6 p.m. Wednesday, August 27, 2014, at New Hope Baptist Church, Gordon Ford Road, West Liberty, Kentucky.
