Obituary

Ernest Brown, 94, of McCullough Court, Morehead, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2014. He was born on March 20, 1920, in Morehead to the late Frank and Anna Kegley Brown. 'Ernie,' as he was known to his many friends, was a meat cutter by trade and retired from Allen's IGA Foodliner in Morehead in 1985. He was a long-time member of the East End Church of God in Tolliver Addition. Throughout his lifetime, he enjoyed gardening, working in his yard, visiting with his many friends, and especially spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his extended family and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Mildred Rogers Brown, who passed away on September 7, 2004, along with brothers, Elwood, Wilford, Charles, Leonard, Billie, and Eugene Brown, and sister, Zona Kelsey. He is survived by one sister, Mildred Faye Patrick of Morehead. Other survivors include one daughter, Ernestine 'Teana' Christopher, Columbus, Ohio, and one son, James L. Brown Sr. (Mary Ann), LaGrange, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, Robbie and Debbie Christopher, Columbus, Ohio; Cindy Kinnard (Clay), Elk Grove, California; Terri Speaks (Jack), Apopka, Florida; Melissa Brown, Westerville, Ohio; Jaime Brown and James L. Brown, Jr. (Anne), LaGrange, Kentucky; and Joseph F. Brown (Kristen), Georgetown, Kentucky, along with four great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn Grace Brown, LaGrange, Kentucky; Camryn and Kaelyn Kinnard, Elk Grove, California; and Kennedy Alise Brown, Georgetown, Kentucky. Mr. Brown was a World War II veteran, honorably serving with the U.S. Army, Combat Company 13, 9th Armored Division, 27th Armored Infantry Batallion, primarily in the European Theater. On March 7, 1945, he and his unit participated in the capture of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen, Germany. This stunning, strategic victory of the war allowed American troops to cross the Rhine River, and is credited with saving thousands of American lives, and spearheading the invasion of Nazi Germany. As a result, a Presidential Unit Citation was issued honoring each officer and man of the Combat Command 13, 9th Armored Division for the 'superb skill, daring, and esprit de corps displayed in the dash to the Rhine, the capture of the Ludendorff Bridge, and the successful exploration of the first bridgehead across Germany's formidable river barrier which made an outstanding contribution to the defeat of the enemy.' Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2014, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with Brother Ray Glover and Brother Jerry Maschino officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens with full military honors by Morehead American Legion Post 126. Pallbearers will be James L. Brown, Jr., Joseph F. Brown, Edward Brown, Bobby Patrick, Mike Patrick, and Bruce Adkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Robbie Cartmill, Harold Tackett, Sid Caudill, Carl Sizemore, and Carl DeHart. Visitation will be 5 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 30, 2014, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Visitation: Thursday, October 30, 2014, from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Funeral: Friday, October 31, 2014, at 1 p.m. Interment: Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens
