Emma Irene
Flanery
Mar 15, 1910 — Dec 31, 2007
Emma Irene Edwards Alexander Flanery, 97, of U.S. Hwy. 60 West, Morehead, Kentucky, was born March 15, 1910, to Samuel Henry and Minnie Ross Edwards of Lee County, Kentucky. Emma and Everett Alexander were married in 1928. Four children were born in that union: Genola Fern, Francis Jean, Bettye Shrout, and Earl Alexander. Genola Fern, Francis Jean and their father preceded Emma in Death. Earl lives in Franklin, NC; Bettye, in Farmers. Emma and Rev. Otis Flanery were married April 24, 1953, and moved from Winchester to Rowan County to Pastor the Church of God in Farmers, Kentucky. Since the church was located in an area that flooded, Brother Flanery suggested that the members purchase the property on U.S. 60 to build a new church. All of the members agreed. Brother Flanery was not only a wonderful Pastor, he was a very good heavy equipment operator. He helped in building several of the buildings on the Morehead State University Campus. He told the members that if they would work to pay for the basement, he would dig and pour the footers. So, they went right to work starting a restaurant at the Morehead Stockyards. The ladies did the cooking and the men helped in serving the food and fixing the coffee. Sister Flanery and the members, that helped so faithfully, accomplished their goal and paid for the property and construction of the basement. Emma also contributed to the construction by laying the concrete blocks for the Sunday School rooms. The congregation grew to a record attendance of 135. Brother and Sister Flanery also Pastored at Secret-s Crossing in Fleming County, and later in Harrodsburg, Kentucky, then, back to Farmers for several years. Rev. Flanery preceded Emma in death July 5, 1984. Emma leaves two children: Earl Alexander and Bettye Shrout; four grandchildren: Teresa Osborne, Anthony Shrout, Scott Alexander and Lee Alexander; four great grandchildren: Angela Bowyer, Jamie Osborne and Scott-s twin girls: Brooke and Jordan; two great-great grandchildren: Angela-s daughter Amber and son Nathan. Also, many other loved ones and friends. Emma was a member of the Church of God since 1950, but moved to Heaven December 31, 2007, at 7:45 p.m. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, January 6, 2008, at the Morehead Christ Way Church of God (formerly the Farmers Church of God) with Brother Jerry Horn officiating. Mrs. Flanery will lie in state after 1 p.m. Sunday at the Church. Pallbearers will be Gerald Howard, Jesse Ginter, Freddy Ginter, Jeff Buckler, Daniel Farmers, and Forrest Williams. Visitation is after 5 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2008, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals. A special service will be held 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
