Obituary

Earl Daugherty, age 87, of Morehead, Kentucky, formerly of Phelps, Kentucky, passed away Friday, January 11, 2013, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. He was born May 12, 1925, at Jamboree in Pike County, Kentucky, a son of the late Daniel and Bertha Daugherty. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Hulen Daugherty, and three sisters, Maggie Ball, Annie Blankenship, and Pearl Coleman. Earl's wife of 66 years, Magdalene Jones Daugherty, whom he married November 7, 1945, passed away October 7, 2012. Their son, Jimmy Roger Daugherty, also preceded his parents in death on September 9, 1998. Mr. Daugherty is survived by one son, Elmer Rankin Daugherty and wife Carol of Morehead, Kentucky; two daughters, Wilma Sue Whitt and husband Eddie of Apple Valley, Minnesota, and Mary Ann Lester of Morehead, Kentucky; six grandchildren, Daniel Daugherty and wife Kammy of Lexington, Kentucky, Andy Daugherty and wife Brittany of Morehead, Kentucky, Jeremy Earl Lester of Georgetown, Kentucky, Jessica Lester and Jonah Lester, both of Phelps, Kentucky, and Brian Whitt and wife Jana of Burnsville, Minnesota; five great grandchildren, Andrea Daugherty, Payton Lester, Alyssa Lester, Austin Wolford, and Easton Whitt. Other survivors include two brothers, J. C. Daugherty and wife Phyllis of Phelps, Kentucky, and James Arthur Daugherty of Columbus, Ohio; one sister, Loretta Urdak of Columbus, Ohio; numerous nieces and nephews; extended family members; and friends. Earl served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II and was known for his strong work ethic throughout his life. A coal miner for the Chisholm Coal Company in Pike County for many years, he was a member of United Mine Workers of America Local 1511. For most of his life, he enjoyed gardening and sharing his bountiful harvest with family and friends. Every morning he greatly enjoyed greeting other 'early riser' walkers in the neighborhood. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who will be lovingly remembered. Visitation is after 5 p.m. on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with special services at 7 p.m. with Bro. Earl Jones, Jr., and Rev. Glenn Mann officiating. Military rites will be conducted by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Burial will be on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, at Davidson Memorial Gardens in Ivel, Kentucky. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Elmer Jones, Robert Hayes, Bill Shelly, Dr. Matthew Birdwhistell, Robert Bennett, Charles Blair, Buck Dawson, Roger Daugherty, and Albert Evans.
