Obituary

Donna Jean Hatton Smedley, 47, of Dry Creek Road, Clearfield, Kentucky, wife of Michael L. Smedley, died Friday, November 20, 2009, at her home following a three-year battle with ovarian cancer. Born January 27, 1962, in Carlisle, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late John E. Hatton and Margaret Willoughby Hatton Moore, now of Bethel, Kentucky. Surviving in addition to her husband and mother are four children, including three daughters, Krista Smedley of the U. S. Marine Corps, Hawaii, and Whitley and Ashley Smedley, at home; one son, C. J. Smedley, also at home; three sisters, Elizabeth Hatton of Bethel, Kentucky, Joyce Patton of Buzzard-s Roost, Kentucky, and Rita Hunt of Owingsville, Kentucky; and two brothers, Paul Hatton of Bethel, Kentucky, and Everette Hatton of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. She also was preceded in death by a brother, John Douglas Hatton. A graduate of Morehead State University, she was a former teacher who became a full-time homemaker and mother who home-schooled her children. She worked several years at Roses Department Store in Morehead and loved to travel and work in her garden. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was a former president of the Owingsville Ward Primary. She and her husband were married July 3, 1993, in Clearfield. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Owingsville Ward on KY 36, one-half mile east of Exit 121 of I-64, with Bishop Ted Marshall officiating. Burial will follow in the Smedley Family Cemetery on Dry Creek Road in Clearfield. Pallbearers will be Larry Moore, Brandon Riley, Everette Hatton, C. J. Smedley, Robert Thomas, James Barber, Steve McKinney, and Krista Smedley. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Monday, November 23, 2009, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead, Kentucky, and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Owingsville, Kentucky. Memorial gifts are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
