A World War II veteran, Dewey Duff served in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946. In 1944, before leaving for his duties on the USS Casaan Bay, a converted naval aircraft carrier, he married Sophia Ann Bobrosky. He was discharged from the Navy as watertender third class. Upon his return to his home state of Virginia, he wore many hats in the workforce. He was a coal miner, a logger, a school bus driver, taught Algebra, Spelling and Industrial Arts in a high school setting and eventually became engineer of plant operations for a hospital run by the Sisters of Notre Dame in Lynch, KY. He moved his family to Morehead, KY to work with the Sisters of Notre Dame, in the same capacity, and became the first employee at St. Claire Medical Center in 1963. Mr. Duff, whom many called 'Chief,' retired from St. Claire in 1990. Dewey, our 'Poppy,' loved to fish, be outdoors, and go boating on the lake. He loved teaching his grandchildren all of his skills and passing on his knowledge with stories of his life and traditions. He fixed everything he found broken-.no matter, he knew how to make things right. He was certified in TV and radio repair, as well as plumbing. He worked on automobiles, was an electrician, and loved working with wood. He built his own home, with the help of his father, where six of his eight children were born. He built a seven foot grandfather clock from walnut driftwood he collected when the land to form Cave Run Lake was flooded. Unassuming and soft spoken, Dewey loved his wife and family beyond compare. Sophia, his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the sparks in his eyes and he cherished being together with them building memories to last a lifetime.
