DeWayne Garfield Barnett was born December 1, 1948, at home to the late Wilda Jean Hudson Barnett Burchett and Sydney Lowell Barnett. He passed away early Saturday, January 19, 2019, at his residence in Clearfield. DeWayne Barnett was a veteran of the US Army, where he taught Army Air & Missile Defense Command at Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas. After leaving the service, DeWayne worked in telecommunications and later became a local business owner. DeWayne loved science fiction, Harley motorcycles, leather-working, reading, and collecting family stories. His favorite pastime was answering the "Dear Santa" letters for the local post office, where he went so far as to look up phone numbers of the parents so he could tailor his responses to each child. DeWayne was a Past Master of Phelps 482. His wife, Hettie DeHart Barnett of Clearfield survives him; along with two of their daughters, Melinda (Monte) Rivers of Haldeman, and Amanda (Andrew) Gates of Rincon, Georgia; and one grandson, Montgomery Rivers of Morehead. Other survivors include three brothers, Jeffrey Barnett of Olive Hill, Robert (Adela) Burchett of El Paso, Texas, and Jim Burchett of Morehead; three sisters, Linda (Harry) Campbell of Clearfield, Pamela Barnett (Robert) Jent of Morehead, and Paula Cordova of Munfordville; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Barnett was preceded in death by his eldest daughter, Jessica Dawn Barnett; his mother Wilda Jean Hudson Barnett Burchett, his stepfather Robert Gene Burchett, and his biological father Sydney Lowell Barnett. A celebration of life will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals Memorial Chapel with family officiating and military honors presented by Morehead American Legion Post No. 126. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Department of Veteran Affairs, Lexington VA Medical Center - Cooper, 1101 Veterans Drive, 135-LD, Lexington, KY 40502-2236.
