Dr. David Kent Hylbert, 75, of Woodland Drive, Morehead, passed away Monday, March 31, 2014, at St. Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead. Born November 3, 1938, in Fayetteville, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Bernard George and Stella Eskew Hylbert. Dave is survived by his wife of 50 years, Shirley Shrigley Hylbert, whom he wed August 3, 1963. They are parents to three sons, Dwayne D. and wife Tammy Jo Hylbert of Berea, Kenneth Lee and wife Laura Hylbert of Nicholasville, and the late Timothy Eugene Hylbert. Other survivors include four grandchildren, Ashley, Kathryn, Timothy, and Jacqueline Hylbert; and one sister, Carol Ann and husband Dan Totire of Bristol, Connecticut. Dr. Hylbert received his bachelor's and master's degrees in geology from Ohio University and the Ph.D. in Geology from The University of Tennessee. He began his career at Morehead State University in 1963 and for the next 36 years served as Professor of Geosciences, conducted research, and authored numerous publications, particularly in areas related to underground coal mining. From 1966 until 1981, he was also heavily involved with external agencies including the U.S. Geological Survey in the Kentucky Mapping Program and the Appalachian Coal Mining Institute, as well as serving as Project Director for contracts between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and MSU and contracts between the University of Kentucky Institute for Mining and Minerals Research and MSU. He was recognized for developing a technique to detect coal mine roof falls using satellite imagery and in 2005 was presented the Lifetime Achievement Award by the American Institute of Professional Geologists Kentucky Section. In 1982, he was the recipient of the Morehead State University Distinguished Researcher Award. A past president of the Geological Society of Kentucky, Dr. Hylbert was an active member of the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists and the American Institute of Professional Geologists. Following his retirement, Dave volunteered as a pilot for Lifeline and Angel Flight transporting patients for medical treatment. He also continued his longtime commitment to the Clearfield Baptist Church, where he served in many capacities, including Deacon. Visitation is 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2014, at Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals in Morehead. Graveside services will be conducted 3 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 2014, at Zanesville Memorial Park, Zanesville, Ohio, with the Rev. H. A. Thompson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals, 400 Fraley Drive, Morehead, KY 40351. Visitation: Wednesday, April 2, 2014, from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m., Northcutt & Son Funeral: Thursday, April 3, 2014, at 3 p.m., Zanesville Memorial Park Interment: Zanesville Memorial Park, Zanesville, Ohio
