Obituary

David Lee -Cornbread- Manley, age 82, of White Avenue, Mt. Sterling, Kentucky, passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at his home. Born December 5, 1929, in Montgomery County, Kentucky, he was the only child of the late Owen and Blanche Chandler Manley. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Cathy Ann Manley Lambert in 2011, and one grandson, Ben Willoughby in 2006. Cornbread is survived by his wife, Beulah Rogers Manley, whom he married January 27, 1961; one daughter; Vicki Latimer and husband Jim of Mt. Sterling, Kentucky; and four grandchildren, Lindsay, Elizabeth, Dana and Alex Latimer. In 1951, Cornbread began a career in fire service that would span more than six decades. At 20 years of age, he became one of four members of the Mt. Sterling Fire Department. Fifteen years later, in 1966, he was named Fire Chief. During his ten years as Fire Chief, Cornbread advanced the department to 22 paid firefighters. In 1977, Cornbread was named the State Fire Inspector by Gov. Julian Carroll and spent the next twenty-six years in statewide fire service. Cornbread was named Assistant Fire Marshal in 1983 by Gov. Martha Layne Collins. In 1996, Gov. Paul Patton appointed him State Fire Marshal, a position he held until his retirement in 2003. Cornbread was always proud of the fact that he advanced through the ranks from fighting fires as a 20-year-old to becoming an administrator responsible for overseeing 150 people and providing assistance to approximately 800 different fire departments throughout the state. Cornbread always felt the same, -All of my life I have been fighting fires or fooling with the fire department. To be good at what you do, you have to enjoy it.- And, Cornbread always did! Cornbread was also a U.S. Army veteran and enjoyed watching U.K. basketball and the Cincinnati Reds, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
