David Milton
Brumagen, Jr.
Aug 31, 1934 — Dec 31, 2014
David Milton Brumagen, Jr., age 80, died at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, Kentucky, on December 31, 2014. Born August 31, 1934, in Robertson County, Kentucky, to David Milton Brumagen, Sr. and Jewell Mann Brumagen, he attended Athens High School and later Berea College before graduating from the University of Kentucky with a doctorate in biological science in 1965. On November 15, 1958, David married Janice Lee Turner of London, Kentucky, whom he met while both were in college at UK. David and Janice moved to Morehead, where he was a professor of biology at Morehead State University, and Janice an assistant professor of nursing. His greatest joy, outside of his family, was teaching and helping students. He served as the advisor for the pre-dental program, but was interested in all students and several have credited him with encouraging them to continue their education in graduate or professional school. Following his retirement in 1996, David continued to teach part-time for MSU for several years. In addition to his classroom teaching, David served as the department chair of the MSU biology department from 1972 to 1980, held a visiting professorship at the University of California-Berkeley in 1983, was chair of the MSU Faculty Senate, and in 1987 was appointed by Governor Martha Layne Collins as advisor to the national task force responsible for the clean-up of the Maxey Flats nuclear waste disposal site in Fleming County. A true Renaissance man, David loved beauty in all its forms, from poetry and music, to nature. One of his greatest pleasures was working in the summer garden and enjoying the first tomato of the season. David could quote passages from Shakespeare to the Bible, turn a beautiful bowl from wood, and fix anything. David was preceded in death by his parents, David and Jewell, his sister Barbara Dargavell, and his brother William Thomas Brumagen. He is survived by his wife Janice Turner Brumagen, Morehead; his sisters Rosalyn Schultz, Loveland, Ohio, and Ella Webb (Donald), Paris, his aunt Alice Mann Miller, Mt. Olivet and his sister-in-law Ginny Brumagen, Nicholasville; his daughters Kelly Bradley (Whitney), Morehead, and Regan Brumagen, Corning, New York, and his son Boone Brumagen (Tina), Wellsville, Pennsylvania. David is also survived by nine beloved grandchildren, Bennett Bradley, Kegan Brumagen, Paige Brumagen, Will Bradley, Ciaran Brumagen, Caolan Brumagen, Nate Ianovici, Devin Ianovici and Leila Ianovici as well as numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, contributions in David's name can be made to the NewHope Clinic/P.O. Box 1088/Owingsville, KY 40360-1088 or Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Claire (https://www.st-claire.org/donations.aspx). David's family members would like to express their deep appreciation to the caregivers at St. Claire Medical Center for their gentle, professional, and humane care for David during his stay. They would also like to thank the Morehead EMS and Fire Rescue responders who volunteer their time, expertise, and energy to the community, as well as the many friends of David's who visited, called, and sent messages to him in these past weeks. David was loved by many for his mischievous humor, sharp wit, generous heart, and loving spirit. He will be missed. Northcutt & Son Home for Funerals is caring for arrangements.
