Dave Allen Sheffel

Dave Allen Sheffel, 89, of Morehead, Kentucky, husband of Brenda Swanson Sheffel, passed away Friday, July 31, 2026, at UK St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead.

Dave was born February 11, 1937, in Denver, Colorado, the son of Wayne Elwood Sheffel and Fern Readout Sheffel. Following his graduation from Faith Bible Academy in Camdenton, Missouri, he earned the Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Wesleyan College in Ft. Worth and the Master of Theology degree from Dallas Theological Seminary in Dallas, Texas.

Dave and Brenda Swanson Sheffel were united in marriage on September 1, 1961. Together they created a loving home, worked toward common goals, and enjoyed a life built on partnership, dedication, and the support they gave one another. They made their home in California for many years before relocating to Morehead in 2001 to be closer to Dave's family.

Dave devoted his life to ministry, education, service, and leadership, leaving a legacy defined by compassion, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to helping others.

He began his ministry in 1964 with Youth for Christ in San Diego, California, an interdenominational organization serving high school students and at-risk youth. There, he directed court-related programs for delinquent teenagers, mentoring countless young people while recruiting and training staff, developing fundraising initiatives, contributing to national program development, and serving as Ministry Director for an expanding program in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dave then served for ten years on the pastoral staff of First Presbyterian Church in San Diego, ministering to young adults, youth, and children within a congregation of more than 2,000 members. As Director of Education, he oversaw educational ministries and helped manage the church's 500-acre conference center.

Later, as Business and Facilities Manager at Walnut Creek Presbyterian Church, Dave provided leadership in financial management, administrative operations, and facilities planning and maintenance.

Throughout his career, Dave remained deeply committed to serving those who were often overlooked. He wrote for The Wittenburg Door, a publication for church youth workers, authored educational curriculum for major publishers, helped establish the San Diego Downtown Coordinating Council to unite churches and social service agencies, and worked on the front lines of outreach ministries serving individuals experiencing homelessness and those living with mental illness, forming lasting relationships with many whose lives he touched.

After moving to Morehead, Dave brought the same passion for ministry and service to Morehead United Methodist Church. Always eager to serve, he actively participated in the life of the church and was honored to fill the pulpit whenever the regular minister was unavailable.

Dave was a true people person who never met a stranger. He treasured time with his family and friends and enjoyed connecting with others, whether through Ham radio, playing the guitar, or preparing meals to share with those he loved.

In addition to his wife Brenda, others to cherish his memory include his sons, Jeffrey Allen Sheffel and wife Julie Hoezee of Denver, Colorado, and Jonathan Andrew Sheffel, of Denver, Colorado; brothers, Don Sheffel of Cincinnati, Ohio, Paul Sheffel of Little, Kentucky, Mike Sheffel of Jackson, Kentucky, Alan Sheffel of Alexandria, Kentucky, half-brother, Eric Sheffel of Jackson, Kentucky; sisters, Vicky Sheffel of Lexington, Kentucky, Becky Mulroy of Chicago, Illinois, Susie Geiger of Waco, Texas; and half-sister, Melody Sheffel of Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Tom, Mark, and Philip Sheffel; and a sister, Delores Neace.

Dave's life was marked by a steadfast dedication to faith, service, and community. Whether mentoring young people, strengthening churches, or advocating for those in need, he led with humility, kindness, and compassion. His legacy of service and love continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service celebrating Dave’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at the Morehead United Methodist Church, 227 West Main Street, Morehead, KY 40351, with Senior Pastor Chris Basil officiating.
